Walter Schulthess

Biography

Schulthess was born in Zürich into the Schulthess family, a wealthy and renowned merchant family which ran a bakery and Konditorei (confectionery) at the Rüdenplatz in Zürich, to which belonged educator and philanthropist Anna Pestalozzi-Schulthess.{{Cite book|last=Silber|first=Käte|title=Anna Pestalozzi-Schultheß und der Frauenkreis um Pestalozzi|publisher=De Gruyter|year=1932|isbn=9783111564067|location=Berlin and Leipzig|doi=10.1515/9783111564067}} He studied in Munich and Berlin, then returned to Zürich. He wrote instrumental and vocal music, and according to Nicolas Slonimsky{{cite encyclopedia | title = Schulthess, Walter | encyclopedia = Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians | editor = Nicolas Slonimsky | edition = Concise 7th? | year = 1988 |page=1131 }} "excelled in lyric songs, in a style resembling Othmar Schoeck's." He was married to the violinist Stefi Geyer from 1920 until her death in 1956, and with her and Paul Sacher founded the Collegium Musicum Zürich chamber orchestra in 1941.{{HDS|034980|Walter Schulthess|author=Baldassarre, Antonio|date=09 July 2010}} In later life he became more involved in musical organization, serving as president of the jury for the Clara Haskil International Piano Competition, from its inception in 1963 until 1969.[http://www.clara-haskil.ch/?page_id=112&lang=en Clara Haskil website] He died in his home city of Zürich, aged 76.
