Early service
Delamain was born in Saint Helier, the son of Charles Henry Delamain and Susan Sarah Christina Gun. He attended the Royal Military College and was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Berkshire Regiment) on 22 October 1881.{{London Gazette|issue=25029|page=5194|date=21 October 1881}} On 13 January 1885 he was seconded for service with the Indian Staff Corps,{{London Gazette|issue=25440|page=576|date=10 February 1885}} and was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Bombay Staff Corps on 1 February 1885, with seniority of 22 October 1881.{{London Gazette|issue=25621|page=4226|date=31 August 1886}} He was promoted to captain, 22 October 1892,{{London Gazette|issue=26354|page=7398|date=16 December 1892}} and given the temporary rank of Major, 4 November 1898.{{London Gazette|issue=27055|page=1111|date=21 February 1899}} As Commandant of the Native Military Base Depot during the Boxer Rebellion he was mentioned in despatches.{{London Gazette|issue=27313|page=3280|date=14 May 1901}} On 26 May 1901 he was appointed a Special Service Officer on the staff of the China Field Force,{{London Gazette|issue=27365|page=6713|date=15 October 1901}} and his rank of major was made substantive on 10 July 1901.{{London Gazette|issue=27362|page=6486|date=4 October 1901}} In October 1902 he was in command of a detachment from the 23rd Bombay Rifles (renamed as the 123rd Outram's Rifles the following year) sent via Aden to British Somaliland as reinforcement during the Somaliland campaign.{{Cite newspaper The Times |title=Latest intelligence - The Somaliland Rising|date=25 October 1902 |page=7 |issue=36908| }} In 1905 he was again mentioned in despatches for his service with the Outram's Rifles, commanding the escort to the Aden Boundary Commission for eight months,{{London Gazette|issue=27765|page=1198|date=17 February 1905}} was awarded the Distinguished Service Order on 14 April,{{London Gazette|issue=27784|page=2798|date=14 April 1905}} and promoted to lieutenant-colonel, with seniority of 12 January 1905.{{London Gazette|issue=27788|page=3104|date=28 April 1905}} On 12 January 1908 he was made brevet colonel,{{London Gazette|issue=28134|page=3316|date=5 May 1908}} and substantive colonel on 1 January 1911.{{London Gazette|issue=28487|page=3095|date=21 April 1911}} He was appointed assistant adjutant-general on 17 November 1912.{{London Gazette|issue=28683|page=502|date=21 January 1913}}
First World War

Post-war
On 14 November 1919 Delamain was given command of a division,{{London Gazette|issue=31965|page=7231|date=6 July 1920}} and he was promoted to lieutenant-general on 1 April 1920,{{London Gazette|issue=32013|supp=y|page=8349|date=10 August 1920}} with seniority later backdated to 21 December 1919.{{London Gazette|issue=32326|supp=y|page=3979|date=17 May 1921}} He served as Adjutant-General, India from 10 November 1920{{London Gazette|issue=32254|page=2001|date=11 March 1921}} to 28 March 1923,{{London Gazette|issue=32829|page=3873|date=1 June 1923}} when he retired from the Indian Army.{{London Gazette|issue=32832|page=4065|date=8 June 1923}}
Delamain was also colonel of the 117th Mahrattas from 28 October 1921{{London Gazette|issue=32501|page=8497|date=28 October 1921}} until he reached the age limit, being replaced by Major-General R.C. Wilson on 18 February 1932.{{London Gazette|issue=33800|page=1131|date=19 February 1932}}
