Professional career

Mohammed made his professional debut on 29 April 2017, defeating Isaac Mensah by fourth-round technical knockout (TKO) in Accra.{{cite news|url=https://www.boxingafrica.com/2020/04/wasiru-mohammed-the-time-is-ripe-to-chase-world-title-dreams/|title=Wasiru Mohammed: The time is ripe to chase world title dreams|work=boxingafrica.com|date=2 April 2020|accessdate=11 November 2020}} After firing off seven wins in less than a year, including six by stoppage, he received his first title shot on 12 May 2018, and scored a first-round knockout (KO) of veteran Kamarudeen Boyefio for the vacant Ghanaian super bantamweight title. Two months later he knocked out another experienced fighter in Raymond Commey to retain his belt.{{cite news|url=https://www.sports24ghana.com/wasiru-mohammed-stops-raymond-commey-to-defend-his-super-bantamweight-title/|title=Wasiru Mohammed stops Raymond Commey to defend his super bantamweight title|work=sports24ghana.com|date=17 July 2018|accessdate=11 November 2020}}

On 13 October 2018, Mohammed faced undefeated prospect Isaac Sackey for his WBO Africa super bantamweight title. In the second round, Sackey held onto him excessively until Mohammed finally threw him off in the closing seconds, and they both threw multiple punches after the bell.{{cite web|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAUsTzz5CdA|title=Chaos rock Bukom Boxing Arena after Wasiru Mohammed TKO Isaac Sackey|publisher=YouTube|date=16 October 2018|accessdate=11 November 2020}} Less than a minute into the next round, Mohammed floored the defending champion with a hard right. He rose to his feet quickly but referee Adorn Bertin waved off the fight without a mandatory eight count. Sackey's team rushed into the ring to confront Bertin, after which chaos erupted inside the Bukom Boxing Arena and the event promptly ended without an official decision. The fight spilled outside the ring as chairs were thrown and used as weapons, with one of them striking Bertin.{{cite news|url=https://www.theghanareport.com/crowd-violence-mars-isaac-sackey-vs-wasiru-mohammed-bout/|title=Crowd Violence Mars Isaac Sackey Vs Wasiru Mohammed Bout|work=The Ghana Report|first=Kobby|last=Asamoah|date=16 October 2018|accessdate=11 November 2020}}{{cite news|url=https://www.watchghana.com/en/details/10902/bukom-arena-declared-crime-scene|title=Bukom Arena declared crime scene|work=Watch Ghana|date=17 October 2018|accessdate=11 November 2020}} The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) submitted video evidence to the police and later handed out suspensions to Sackey's trainer and two cornermen.{{cite news|url=https://m.peacefmonline.com/pages/sports/boxing/201810/365837.php|title=GBA Submits Video Evidence To Ghana Police|work=Peace FM|date=21 October 2018|accessdate=11 November 2020}}{{cite news|url=https://www.modernghana.com/sports/900723/gba-bans-nettey-2-others.html|title=GBA Bans Nettey, 2 Others|work=Modern Ghana|date=28 November 2019|accessdate=11 November 2020}} Sackey's team filed an appeal with the WBO to protest the stoppage, but they officially recognized Mohammed as champion at a ceremony in November.{{cite news|url=https://www.gbcghanaonline.com/sport/wasiru-declared-champion-after-controversial-bout/2018/|title=Wasiru declared champion after controversial bout|work=GBCGhanaOnline|publisher=Ghana Broadcasting Corporation|date=5 November 2018|accessdate=11 November 2020}}
