Wayne Lee Madsen (born 2 January 1984) is a South African born Italian sportsman who plays professional cricket and previously played field hockey for the South Africa men's national field hockey team. He has represented Derbyshire County Cricket Club in English county cricket since 2009, after earlier playing domestic cricket in South Africa, and has also played franchise cricket. He is a right-handed batsman and occasional right-arm off spin bowler. He made his debut for the Italy national cricket team in 2023, qualifying as a citizen by descent.
Cricket career
Hailing from a strong cricketing family, with uncles Henry Fotheringham, Michael Madsen, Trevor Madsen and cousin Greg Fotheringham all playing first-class cricket in South Africa, Madsen made his debut in 2003 for KwaZulu-Natal cricket team.{{cite web|url=http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/content/player/46543.html|title=Player Profile: Wayne Lee Madsen|publisher=CricInfo|access-date=10 May 2010}} In August 2009 he signed his contract with Derbyshire, following a strong run of form with two centuries in four games.{{cite web|url=http://www.cricinfo.com/countycricket2009/content/story/419198.html|title= Madsen signs contract with Derbyshire|date=12 August 2009|publisher=CricInfo|access-date=10 May 2010}} He captained Derbyshire for four seasons;{{cite news| url= https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/billy-godleman-appointed-derbyshire-s-championship-captain-as-madsen-steps-down-988607| title=Godleman appointed Derbyshire captain| work=ESPNcricinfo| date=24 March 2016| accessdate=15 April 2021}} in the 2012 season, Derbyshire were promoted from County Championship Division Two to Division One. Madsen has also played in the Pakistan Super League. He has signed for Manchester Originals for The Hundred.
