West Stanley railway station was a railway station on the North Eastern Railway serving the town of Stanley in County Durham, England.

History

The loop line between {{stnlnk|Annfield Plain}} and {{stnlnk|Pelton}} was built by the North Eastern Railway (NER), and opened for freight trains on 1 January 1886.{{sfn|Conolly|1976|loc=p. 27, section C5}}{{sfn|Allen|1974|p=159}} This deviation line allowed several steep rope-worked inclines (on the former Pontop and South Shields Railway section of the old Stanhope and Tyne Railway) to be avoided.{{sfn|Allen|1974|pp=43,159}} Passenger stations on the loop line, including Shield Row, were opened on 1 February 1894.{{sfn|Butt|1995|p=210}} The final section of the deviation between Pelton and {{stnlnk|Birtley}} was opened for freight trains in 1893, and for passenger trains in 1896.{{sfn|Allen|1974|p=160}}

On 1 January 1923 the NER amalgamated with other companies to form the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER).{{sfn|Allen|1974|pp=185–6,233–4}} On 1 February 1934 the LNER renamed the station West Stanley.{{sfn|Butt|1995|pp=210,246}}

The station was closed to regular passenger services on 23 May 1955.{{sfn|Butt|1995|p=246}}
