Whomp! is a webcomic authored and drawn by Ronnie Filyaw. The comic centers around the life and antics of the overweight, junk-food-obsessed and socially inept nerd Ronnie, who is a fictionalized version of the author, and his roommate, Agrias (Li Ming Chui).

The webcomic was released every Monday, Wednesday and Friday: its art-style, characters and storylines have evolved significantly since the strip's debut in 2010, starting from black and white strips to the full color comic it is today.

The comic went on hiatus from June 2021 to February 2025, with updates resuming on February 8, 2025.

Reception

Comic Book Resources has praised Whomp! as being "consistently funny", and described Ronnie as a "modern day Ziggy".[http://www.cbr.com/whomp-the-importance-of-being-ronnie/ 'Whomp!': The importance of being Ronnie], by Larry Cruz, at Comic Book Resources; published April 28, 2014; retrieved March 15, 2017

The Escapist considers it to be at the "sweet spot" between absurdity for the sake of humor, and autobiography,[http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/comicsandcosplay/columns/thepanelist/16910-Phil-Kahns-Top-5-Webcomics#&gid=gallery_6019&pid=1 Five Webcomics I'm Reading That You Should Too] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170316114153/http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/comicsandcosplay/columns/thepanelist/16910-Phil-Kahns-Top-5-Webcomics#&gid=gallery_6019&pid=1 |date=March 16, 2017 }}, by Phil Kahn, at the Escapist; published March 18, 2016; retrieved March 15, 2017 while Alex Langley lauds Filyaw's choice to not idealize or glorify himself.[https://books.google.com/books?id=eZO7AQAAQBAJ&dq=whomp+filyaw&pg=PA180 Geek Lust: Pop Culture, Gadgets, and Other Desires of the Likeable Modern Geek] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170316114232/https://books.google.ca/books?id=eZO7AQAAQBAJ&pg=PA180&lpg=PA180&dq=whomp+filyaw&source=bl&ots=y8hbQ0-EEk&sig=qNUdtQXHg-8MJXy1PzEdjiFnIL8&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjS-oPLwNnSAhWJ3YMKHfnYA5sQ6AEIuAEwHA#v=onepage&q=whomp%20filyaw&f=false |date=March 16, 2017 }}, by Alex Langley; published October 11, 2013, by Krause Publications (via Google Books)

Many of the strips' jokes use Ronnie's social anxiety and obesity as a source of humor.{{cite web|last=Filyaw|first=Ronnie|title=Whomp!{{snd}}Neck and Neck|url=http://www.whompcomic.com/2012/11/12/neck-and-neck/|accessdate=December 8, 2012}} Ronnie is completely rotund and sports a scrubby beard, of which he appears to be enormously proud,{{cite web|last=Filyaw|first=Ronnie|title=Whomp!{{snd}}Beard News Bears|url=http://www.whompcomic.com/2012/10/19/beard-news-bears/|accessdate=December 8, 2012}} allowing others to touch and feel it.

Ronnie's work as a cartoonist suffers from motivation problems, to the point that his motivation has anthropomorphized into "Motivation Dude". Ronnie's cartoon work is never explored in any detail, other than to show a few strips of his work, of the characters Sun and the Moon living together as roommates with their pet dog, Earth.{{cite web|last=Filyaw|first=Ronnie|title=Whomp!{{snd}}Penned Pun Pain|url=http://www.whompcomic.com/2011/10/10/penned-pun-pain/|accessdate=December 8, 2012}}

Ronnie is depicted as depressed, with some strips showing comical suicide attempts, and excerpts from his journal which claim that everyone hates him. These ideas of inadequacy are also encouraged by M-Dude, who takes perverse pleasure in tormenting Ronnie{{snd}}both physically and psychologically.{{cite web|last=Filyaw|first=Ronnie|title=Whomp!{{snd}}Mister Dude|url=http://www.whompcomic.com/2012/09/19/mister-dude/|accessdate=December 8, 2012}}{{cite web|last=Filyaw|first=Ronnie|title=Whomp!{{snd}}THIS IS CARTOONING|url=http://www.whompcomic.com/2012/05/14/this-is-cartooning/|accessdate=December 8, 2012}}

= Agrias =

File:Agrias, from the webcomic Whomp!.png

Agrias (real name Li Ming Chiu) is Ronnie's (once former) housemate. Sensible and down-to-earth{{snd}}but concerned with her image{{snd}}Agrias often acts as a foil to Ronnie's unpredictable nature. She is shown to have a passing interest in video games and mainstream anime,{{cite web|last=Filyaw|first=Ronnie|title=Whomp!{{snd}}Changing One's Toon|url=http://www.whompcomic.com/2012/11/09/changing-ones-toon/|accessdate=December 8, 2012}} and does not share Ronnie's poor grooming or dietary habits.{{cite web|last=Filyaw|first=Ronnie|title=Whomp!{{snd}}Pretty Insecure|url=http://www.whompcomic.com/2011/12/02/pretty-insecure/|accessdate=December 8, 2012}}

Agrias appears, on some level, to find Ronnie's character repulsive, and as such, the comics do not explore any romantic possibility between the pair{{cite web|last=Filyaw|first=Ronnie|title=Whomp!{{snd}}The Shipping Has Sailed|url=http://www.whompcomic.com/2012/04/18/the-shipping-has-sailed/|accessdate=December 8, 2012}} (to the point of Agrias assuming that Ronnie is gay), although she ultimately displays a genuine concern for Ronnie's health and well-being.

= Motivation Dude =

An anthropomorphic representation of Ronnie's motivation (or lack thereof), "M-dude" takes sadistic pleasure in savagely beating, humiliating and demeaning Ronnie for his laziness and his physical appearance. He is described by the author as "a simple portrayal of my own self-loathing".{{cite web|title=Webcomic Sessions{{snd}}Interview|url=http://webcomicsessions.com/2012/09/21/ronniefilyaw/|accessdate=February 5, 2013|archive-url=https://archive.today/20130412040503/http://webcomicsessions.com/2012/09/21/ronniefilyaw/|archive-date=April 12, 2013|url-status=dead|df=mdy-all}} M-Dude also displays occasional homo-erotic behaviour toward Ronnie (more specifically, Ronnie's belly).{{cite web|last=Filyaw|first=Ronnie|title=Whomp! {{snd}}Everybody Loves Ronnie|url=https://www.whompcomic.com/comic/everybody-loves-ronnie/|accessdate=February 23, 2024}}
