Wikipedia:Avoid using WikiProject talk page templates

Recently (or not so recently) there has been a push by many Wikipedia:WikiProjects to put templates - like {{tl|U.S. Highway WikiProject}} - on the talk pages of all articles within their scope. While this may help newbies find other like-minded editors, it has a serious flaw. One can no longer find out if there is discussion on a talk page from the color of the "discussion" tab.
