:The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.

:The result of the discussion was: delete/merge. The merge vs. delete issue is largely academic for this category, since the only content is Love Conquers All (film) and the categorization on that article can easily be changed as users see fit. For now, I'm upmerging it to the the parent categories, since that is the standard thing to do in these situations. Good Ol’factory (talk) 04:09, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

:* Propose deleting {{Lc|Mandarin-language Malaysian films}}

:Nominator's rationale: Too specific, I don't see the categories :Category:French-language Swiss films, :Category:French-language Algerian films, :Category:French-language Canadian films either. Timmyshin (talk) 18:09, 12 November 2015 (UTC)

:*{{ping|Fayenatic london}} until you removed the category :Category:Malaysian films it was in the categories it ought to be in. It's still in :Category:Mandarin-language films, because you didn't remove that category. In fact, :Category:Chinese-language Malaysian films ought to be deleted as we don't have a tree of Foo-language films by country... Carlossuarez46 (talk) 21:26, 13 November 2015 (UTC)

:** There is such a tree, although it only has three national branches so far: {{cat|Indian films by language}}, {{cat|Malaysian films by language}} and {{cat|Pakistani films by language}}. Unless and until the second of those gets upmerged to :Category:Malaysian films, there was no need for Love Conquers All (film) to be in that head category as well as the sub-cats by language and genre (:Category:Malaysian romantic drama films). Also, "delete" would de-categorise any other pages that might be added before the close of this discussion, whereas "merge" would look after them. – Fayenatic London 21:33, 13 November 2015 (UTC)

  • Comment - keep or a mild merge -- The language of a film is fundamental to it. Malaysia has a significant Chinese minority. I am not clear how many are Mandarin speakers and how many Cantonese, but potentially we may need a category for each. If we have a Chinese-language category, it may need splitting. I suspect that there are not many countries that are sufficiently multi-lingual to need this kind of split. Peterkingiron (talk) 17:57, 15 November 2015 (UTC)

:* Propose renaming :Category:Chinese short fiction to :Category:Chinese short stories

:The result of the discussion was: rename per nomination; as I understand it, the alternative specific terms Yaksha/Yakshini are gender-specific. – Fayenatic London 11:37, 18 January 2016 (UTC)

:* Propose renaming :Category:Attendant gods to :Category:Jain attendant deities

:Nominator's rationale: Attendant deities also exist in Hindu and Buddhist iconography. So to be more specific about the religion. Redtigerxyz Talk 11:24, 12 November 2015 (UTC)

:The result of the discussion was: rename to :Category:Lordship of Ireland. – Fayenatic London 11:42, 18 January 2016 (UTC)

:* Propose upmerging :Category:Norman and Medieval Ireland to :Category:Medieval Ireland

:Nominator's rationale: upmerge since "Norman" is part of "Medieval", adding Norman in the category name is redundant. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:01, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

:*ALT What about renaming to :Category:Normans in Ireland making it a child of :Category:Medieval Ireland? It's reasonably tight within itself to merit its own subcat I think. Laurel Lodged (talk) 13:37, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

::* The contents isn't about Normans in Ireland, it's rather about medieval Ireland since the English started to occupy Ireland. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:03, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

:*ALT 2 What about renaming to the main article :Category:History of Ireland (1169–1536) ? Laurel Lodged (talk) 09:36, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

::* I doubt if this really adds value. About half of the 14 articles can be categorized straight into a century category (or are already categorized so) and for the remainder it doesn't make a lot of difference whether :Category:Medieval Ireland has 193 or 200 articles. Marcocapelle (talk) 22:46, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

  • Comment -- The preceding period in Irish history is known as "Early Christian". In other places it might be "early Medieval". The problem is with the scope of the target, which needs the splitting out of :Category:Early Christian Ireland. One way of doing that might be ALT2, followed by purging out anything pre-1169 into Early Christian, leaving "Medieval" as a container category, which we can eliminate when empty. Sorry, I do not have the time to implement this. Peterkingiron (talk) 18:53, 8 November 2015 (UTC)

:* I could follow what you were saying about using "Medieval" as a container category for two period categories (pre- and post-1169). But I'm not sure what you mean by "which we can eliminate when empty." Marcocapelle (talk) 20:30, 9 November 2015 (UTC)

  • Note I have purged all pre-1169 articles to Medieval Ireland. Laurel Lodged (talk) 11:02, 13 November 2015 (UTC)
  • Note I've struck my doubts about :Category:History of Ireland (1169–1536). Marcocapelle (talk) 10:18, 14 November 2015 (UTC)
  • Comment -- I am sorry to read of Laura's actions: the target should have been a new :Category:Early Christian Ireland. However,perhaps this discussion can now be closed as a rename. Peterkingiron (talk) 18:02, 15 November 2015 (UTC)

  • ALT 3 What about renaming to the main article :Category:Lordship of Ireland ? I'm proposing this primarily because I don't like "History of (year–year)" category format. There should be a reason for the proposed period split and better put that reason straight in the category name. Pinging {{ping|Laurel Lodged}} and {{ping|Peterkingiron}}. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:50, 22 November 2015 (UTC)

:I can support ALT 3. Laurel Lodged (talk) 10:23, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

  • I can also support :Category:Lordship of Ireland provided this is provided with a clear headnote to the effect that it relates to the period when the Kings of England claimed to be Lords of Ireland. It was in fact often a fairly nominal overlordship except in the Pale. I would still like to see us developing an :Category:Early Christian Ireland for the preceding period. :* Propose deleting {{Lc|Star Wars Anthology films}}

:Nominator's rationale: /Upmerge This name isn't even official and there are only plans for two films. Subcategorizing them is needless. —Justin (koavf)TCM 02:00, 12 November 2015 (UTC)

  • Note. A recent discussion here ended in "no consensus". Good Ol’factory (talk) 05:17, 12 November 2015 (UTC)
  • Merge to Category:Star Wars spin-off films: Correction; there are plans for three Anthology films and they're still called "Anthology", but no one's perfect. That being said, I'm fine with this film being categorized as a spin-off, until there are articles for all three films, which should take at least a year or so.
