Referencing errors on [[Special:Diff/606261697|Wikipedia:Requested articles/Other]]

Reference help requested.

I have no idea how to fix this. Please help:

User talk:Rtobyr

Thanks, 24.176.163.99 (talk) 02:30, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

: I have added the template {{reflist-talk}} to resolve the error message at Wikipedia:Requested articles/Other. You had added a ref within ... tags, but no {{reflist}} to allow the ref to display, see WP:Referencing for beginners. --David Biddulph (talk) 02:51, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Please help me to find a meta/shortname

In the first table of the section Bradford South (UK Parliament constituency)#Elections_in_the_2010s, you see an entry "Democratic Nationalist Party James Lewthwaite".

However, if you look at the markup code for that entry, only "DNP" appears, not "Democratic Nationalist Party".

I've read Template:Election box candidate with party link#Party set up, specifically about

:Template:ArticleName/meta/color

:Template:ArticleName/meta/shortname

I suppose the "shortname" meta file is converting "DNP" to "Democratic Nationalist Party", but I can't find the meta files.

Unfortunately, the article does not have an "Election box metadata" template on its "Talk" page.

Please, would you tell me:

  1. Am I right? Is the meta/shortname file causing the conversion?
  2. If yes, where is it located? I would appreciate an exact URL or internal link, please.

--LukasMatt (talk) 07:36, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

:The documentation doesn't seem very clear; that "ArticleName" ought to be "Party name", I think. In this case the two pages are Template:DNP/meta/shortname and Template:DNP/meta/color. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:48, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

:::Perfect. Thanks.

disruptive administrator

I need some help on obtaining information on a what appears to be a particularly irresponsible administrator.

Could you please explain what is going on?

When trying to access the User talk page for JzG, I get:

User:JzG

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This page has been deleted. The deletion and move log for the page are provided below for reference.

17:11, 24 March 2014 JzG (talk | contribs) deleted page User:JzG ( G5: Creation by a blocked

or banned user in violation of block or ban)

When I go to G5, I get:

G5. Creations by banned or blocked users Shortcut: WP:G5

Further information: Wikipedia:Banning policy and Wikipedia:Blocking policy

Pages created by banned or blocked users in violation of their ban or block, and which have no substantial edits by others. G5 should not be applied to transcluded templates or to categories that may be useful or suitable for merging.

To qualify, the edit must have been made while the user was actually banned or blocked.

A page created before the ban or block does not qualify.

To qualify, the edit must be a violation of the user's block or ban. For example, pages created by a topic-banned user may be deleted if they come under that particular topic, but not if they are in some other topic.

Has this administrator's actions on another article been responsible for his being blocked or banned on one or more articles? If so, can we get him blocked from ours? If not, how can we prevent him from making unjustified deletions without edit warring, which he would win because of his experience and role? Aqm2241 (talk) 08:07, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

:User:JzG's user page was created several times by sock puppets of User:Fairyspit. It wasn't deleted because he created it but because sock puppets created it. So the answer is no. Dougweller (talk) 08:32, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

::And I need to think about this attempt to stop someone from editing Cold fusion in this way. This article is under discretionary sanctions and calling this "our article" is worrying. Dougweller (talk) 08:37, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

:"User:Name" is a user page and not a user talk page. The user talk page is User talk:JzG. See more at Help:Using talk pages. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:43, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

: Just to point out the blindingly obvious, and also the motivation for this baseless complaint: Aqm2241, the article is not yours. It's ours (i.e. Wikipedia's), and it's our policies that rule, not your fervent wish that the world viewed your pet subject differently. You have declared a WP:COI on {{la|cold fusion}}, and that article is under arbitration committee sanctions. You and your possibly-imaginary friends are the problem, not the Wikipedia community or its administrators. Guy (Help!) 11:52, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Submitting new article without saving

I created a new article and submitted it without saving. Is it somewhere safe or gone forever? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Heatmasters (talkcontribs) 08:09, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

  • "Submitted without saving" is meaningless. You did not submit it so it has never reached Wikipedia. But it might still be there on your machine as a page cached by your browser. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 08:51, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

:The post here is the only saved edit by your account. If you clicked a Submit or Show preview button but not Save page then the page was not saved anywhere, except possibly in your own browser. If the browser window and tab is still open then try the browser back button. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:37, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

When using Opera Wikipedia is displayed in very small font, and is unreadable

Commonly use Opera 20 as my browser.

In the past few weeks, whenever I do a search and go into a Wikipedia page from the search results, or go directly into Wikipedia the page is displayed in very tiny font and is unreadable.

I do not get the same issue with either Chrome or IE11 - just Opera. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Auristocrat (talkcontribs) 09:18, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Sky Blu (2)

On 28th April I asked the HD for help editing the Sky Blu Wikipedia article. I made a final alteration and asked if I had done it correctly:

:"Mdann52 has given the Wiki article on Sky Blu a new title and a Facebook reference, but since you said Facebook is not ideal, using WP's Referencing manual I added a news article that supports the "Sky Blu" spelling as another reference. I then had a message on my Talk page saying I had missed out a square bracket, so I added it in, but the footnote now looks a bit strange. Can you correct my mistake, please, and tell me how you did it? Sorry, I am very new to all this. --P123cat1 (talk) 13:28, 29 April 2014 (UTC)"

(1) I have not had a response yet, so do I presume that my alteration was OK?

(2) Since Mdann52 gave the article a new title, i.e. "Sky Blu (rapper)", I see that when entering and clicking "Sky Blu" in the top-right search box on the Wiki page, as some might if they were searching for him, there is no listing of the article under its new name. That will need to be remedied somehow, but I don't know how to do this. --P123cat1 (talk) 10:35, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

:As for your second question, when you pull up the page for Sky Blu, there is a notice right at the top that says "For the DJ of the same name, see Sky Blu (rapper)." Dismas|(talk) 10:46, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

:And for your first question, I fixed the reference using the WP:REFLINKS tool. In order to do so, I first made an edit where I stripped the reference down to just the bare URL. Then the tool was able to find all the information it needed for the template. Dismas|(talk) 10:52, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Second question: Sorry, I missed it.

First question: There was nothing under the Wiki Referencing manual that I used (Help: Referencing for beginners) that mentioned WP:REFLINKS. No wonder I couldn't insert the reference properly. --P123cat1 (talk) 13:24, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

:No, the Reflinks tool is not listed at Ref for Beginners because it's not a beginners sort of tool. What you had was not wrong. You had all the pertinent information. From what I gather of your question, it just didn't look as pretty as you would have liked. All Reflinks did was use the {{tl|cite web}} template to clean it up a bit. I used to type the cite web template in each time using the URL, title, and date accessed fields only. They are the minimum that are required for that template. Reflinks just does that automatically as well as adding things like the publisher and the date the web page was published. Dismas|(talk) 18:27, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Oh, I see, thanks. No, I genuinely thought I had made a mistake. But Reflinks is a much neater way and looks so much better in the footnote that I will attempt it next time I need to insert a reference. Thanks for your detailed explanation, much appreciated. --P123cat1 (talk) 14:16, 1 May 2014 (UTC)

: Don't forget that you can use {{tl|cite web}} without using Reflinks. You can either put in the relevant parameters totally manually, or can use something like ProveIt, or the Cite option from the edit toolbar, to help you. --David Biddulph (talk) 14:27, 1 May 2014 (UTC)

::Indeed. Like I said above, I used to type the {{tl|cite web}} info in manually but other tools do make it easier once you learn them. Dismas|(talk) 20:13, 1 May 2014 (UTC)

I cannot find my new article on Google.

I just wrote an article few days ago (29/4/2014) and I still cannot search any result about that article. Please help, thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tech102 (talkcontribs) 12:43, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

:Firstly, please sign your posts on talk pages with 4 tildes (~~~~) and avoid leading spaces that break the format.
Secondly, we have no control over what Google shows, most articles are picked up in a day or two.
Finally, looking at your edit history, you have made 5 edits:- 1 to your talk page, 1 to Vietnamese cuisine, 2 to Thyme, and one here. Are you sure you created an article? If so, what was its title? - Arjayay (talk) 12:53, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

::Arjayay refers to Special:Contributions/Tech102 which shows your edits here at the English Wikipedia. Do you mean the Vietnamese :vi:Cỏ xạ hương? That currently shows up for me in Google searches. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:19, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Need to Upload Photo to Brian Choper's Wikipedia Page

Dear Fellow Wikipedia Editors:

I'm a college professor and PR professional who is trying to replace an older photograph from 2009 on Brian Choper's Wikipedia page. Since I'm relatively new to this process, I've been prohibited from uploading and/or replacing his photo with another newer photo he sent me (taken in 2014). Mr. Choper does not have these privileges either. I've read through the instructions, and I cannot determine how to apply for these privileges. All I need to do is handle basic text edits (which seem available) and upload images.

Brian Choper

Thanks!

Chucwhit (talk) 15:28, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

:The first concern is whether Choper owns the copyright to that photograph. If he does not, we would have to obtain a license from the photographer for the free use and re-use of that photo. The other concern is that as a PR professional with (apparently) Choper as your client, you should not be editing that article in any way, but merely offering possible content on the talk page of the article (i.e., Talk:Brian Choper). --Orange Mike | Talk 17:54, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Hiitites

This is my first attempt to insert a correction into Wikipedia. In the article on the Hittites, in the section covering King David's reign, it said that Uriah was a military commander. However, in the story in II Samuel 11, Uriah appears to be only a foot soldier, as the commander, Joab, is able to place Uriah wherever Joab wishes to in the battle, including the front lines. I seem to have inserted the term "foot soldier" OK, but did not get the hang of the way to give references. The reference would be II Sam. 11:3. Thank you. (I did not intend to change the description of the other Hittite mentioned in that Wiki. passage.)

: I have done [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Biblical_Hittites&diff=606506053&oldid=606503229 a couple of edits] to tidy up the broken section heading, broken reference, and broken wikilink. For the reference, I used the {{tl|bibleverse}} template used elsewhere in the article. --David Biddulph (talk) 17:47, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Citation error that I can't fix

Following my edits to the Roman à clef article, a citation error appears at the bottom of the page, even though I did not remove the reflist template that was indeed in the article. Can someone fix this? Nightscream (talk) 17:46, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Template for merger

What is the template I should use in order to suggest a page is merged with another one please?GiraffeBoy (talk) 22:45, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
