Event description
We’re inviting Black artists, cultural workers, and supporters to join us for Wikicurious: Navigating Wiki as a Public Figure, an in-person workshop about Wikipedia and its sibling platforms. Co-hosted by Black Lunch Table (BLT) and Wikimedia NYC, this event is for those who may not be familiar with Wikipedia editing, but want to understand how it works, especially how Black artists are represented.
Many artists find that their Wikipedia pages—if they exist at all—contain outdated or inaccurate information, and are curious about how pages get created in the first place. This workshop will introduce the basics:
- How Wikipedia works and why it matters for artists
- What can be done if information is missing or incorrect
- How to navigate disputes about Wikipedia content
- How to add and update images on Wikimedia Commons
- How to make it easier for people to write accurately about your work
This will be a beginner-friendly, collaborative session—no prior experience with Wikipedia is needed. Whether you're an artist, writer, curator, or just curious, you're welcome to join.
There will also be a photo booth where attendees can have their portrait taken for personal use and to be uploaded to [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page Wikimedia Commons].
Brunch style food and drinks will be provided.

About [[Wikimedia NYC]]
Wikimedia New York City is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and local Wikimedia chapter dedicated to building a brighter, broader, and better Wikimedia movement through advancing open content and communities in partnership with the peoples and institutions of the greater New York metropolitan area.
Wikimedia New York City began as a grassroots community of Wikipedians, information professionals, and activists committed to connecting the peoples and institutions of the New York Metropolitan area with Wikipedia and the larger free-culture movement. Prior to its recognition as an official chapter in 2009, its members clearly articulated their commitment to building a Wikipedia as democratic and diverse as the New York City subway and to partnering with libraries, museums, and educational institutions that shared their vision in providing access to knowledge. Its members also distinguished themselves through their commitment to the larger free-culture movement, recognizing that Wikipedia exists as part of a greater information ecosystem. The realization of this early vision for the Chapter is evidenced in its partnerships, its edit-a-thons and monthly meetups, and its role in the early development and growth of projects such as AfroCROWD, Art + Feminism, "Wiki Loves …" initiatives, and other catalyzing, replicable, global efforts growing from a diverse local context.
About [[Black Lunch Table]]
Black Lunch Table (BLT) is a nonprofit and sixteen-year ongoing artist collaboration. Its primary aim has been the production of discursive sites, wherein cultural producers engage in dialogue on a variety of critical issues.
Black Lunch Table Wikimedians mobilize the creation and improvement of a specific set of Wikipedia articles that pertain to the lives and works of Black artists. In the field of mainstream contemporary art, Black artists are still marginalized within our field.
Wikipedia estimates that 77% of its editors are white and 91% men. Our work shifts this demographic and empowers people to write their own histories. Our sessions and events, including BLT Photobooth and edit-a-thons, equip new editors with the skills and resources to create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles and encourages existing editors to focus on filling Wikipedia knowledge gaps.
