Celebrating Polar Women WiR August Editathon

}}

This is the organisation page for the 2016 Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) Women of the Antarctic Wikibomb in collaboration with the Women in Red. Here we can coordinate our editing efforts and discuss relevant issues. A celebration of the pages created will be held at the [http://scar2016.com SCAR2016 conference] in Kuala Lumpur. These efforts aim to recognise the work of women in Antarctic research, to help redress some of the gender bias prevalent throughout the encyclopaedia, and to provide more visible female role models.

{{pull quote|It's fantastics to see all the interest being generated by our efforts and it really does show that this Wikibomb was something long overdue. I've also really enjoyed working on the drafts as this experience has, in more ways than one, inspired me to continue working in Antarctica, perhaps even the Arctic, and to also try that bit harder. These women are truly phenomenal so it's been a great pleasure!|author=Christel Hansen}}

{{pull quote|I heard about the wikibomb through SCAR and also the APECS community I'm involved with. As I've been writing about and working on projects including the theme of women's contributions and presence in Antarctica I was super interested to contribute. I worked in Antarctica in 1995-6 leading a civilian cleanup expedition and then I didn't know much about women who proceeded me there, but when I arrived at Bellingshausen for the joint ecological project with the Russian Antarctic expedition they said they hadn't had women living at the base in decades and only then a few times before our arrival (3 women in the start team). By doing the wiki I knew I'd "meet" living and deceased women who pushed boundaries and helped us understand Antarctica, our planet and ourselves better. I wanted to know what they did, what they studies, something about their family lives and influences and their lives and work after and before Antarctica. The wiki bios are not full biographies but you certainly get a taste for these women I feel grateful to have interacted with by reviewing or writing their wiki entries. I also loved learning about wiki, how entries are written, the rigour of ensuring facts, citations and neutrality in sharing facts. It's a fascinating initiative and I appreciate knowing more about how the entries happen and the enormous amount of behind the scenes work. A truly global project. The collaborative aspect of doing the entries is also inspiring - I'm pro open-source and collaboration and I've found the wiki community helpful, clear and supportive. I have a lot to learn and I'm lucky to have had more experience people in this wikibomb team guide but also empower me to jump in. I only wish I started earlier and did more. One thrill was learning about more place names in Antarctica named after women who worked in the Antarctic and contributed to Antarctic science and exploration (e.g. Lake Karentz, Selkirk Creek etc) because I'm making a map of these placenames.|author=Carol Devine}}

{{pull quote|I got involved in this project because it's been a series of Antarctic women who have inspired to enter and to continue in this field of Antarctic Studies. They do so much work, but it too often remains behind the scenes.
I've discovered so many more stories about Antarctic women from other countries that otherwise would've remained hidden, and it's been really exciting to see this project and the women involved profiled in a whole range of other media as a result.|author=Hanne Nielsen}}

{{pull quote|When I saw the call listed on the SCAR website asking for volunteers to help create Wikipedia pages to promote Women in Antarctic Research, I knew I had to get involved. In 2013 I visited the Ross Sea on a scientific expedition and was in awe of the raw pristine ecosystem. I can't imagine a time when women were actually banned from doing research down there! Learning about the nominees and putting together profiles took a lot of work and it was a lot of fun. For decades, women have made numerous discoveries. I'm really glad to see they'll be that much more represented on the world's largest encyclopedia because of this Wikibomb. As I continue through graduate school, I'll definitely draw on these women as inspirational role models. I'm proud of the progress women have made in science and I hope to further my involvement with the Antarctic research community as I develop in my career.|author=Allison Lee}}

{{pull quote|From Pakistan to Chile and across all the continents, women have and continue to do amazing things to understand our southern-most continent.|author=Alix Post|width=100%}}

{{pull quote|While gathering and preparing the biodata for the Polar Scientists, indirectly it is inspired me to be passionate in my area and enjoys the struggle in order to reach the success. I sincerely hope more and more women scientists especially from Malaysia that can contribute more to our nature. “Yakin Boleh” aka “We can Do It!”|author=Nor Radziah Jusoh}}

{{pull quote|My generation of early career Antarctic researchers is privileged to be able to take women's access to Antarctica for granted. For that, we have to thank a generation of trailblazing women who insisted on our right to equal access, and who embody the tremendous contributions that women make to Antarctic science. This wikibomb gives us, and people everywhere, access to greater knowledge, strong role models, and a richer understanding of the history of this shared global space - women included.

I appreciate being a member of the Women in Antarctica Wikibomb team: to be collaborating with dozens of like-minded researchers from across the globe to accomplish this important goal. I've made virtual connections to several with whom I hope to keep in touch.

I was thrilled to see how many more articles we have been able to publish, but I also am aware of our geographic and linguistic limits. It's a remaining challenge to increase the representation of non-Western and non-anglophone people on Wikipedia - Antarctic scientists are no exception!

I have to extend my appreciation to the organizers, and especially to Thomas and Jan, for all the work they have done to make this happen. I've been introduced to the stories of some remarkable women, and I appreciate the training and experience.|author=Morgan Seag}}
