The tools of change are in your hands! Come learn the skills needed to edit and create wiki-pages and do your bit to readdress the balance and increase the online representation of women in art.

Wikipedia is a wonderful resource tool that many of us refer to on a daily basis. However, it is not without its problems. In particular, Wikipedia’s gender trouble is well-documented. In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female. The effect of this disparity means that content is skewed by the lack of female participation. As Art+Feminism rightly points out, ‘This represents an alarming absence in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge.’ Moreover, there is a comparative shortage of articles about female artists on Wikipedia in comparison to their male counterparts. But all this can change! On International Women’s Day, The Hepworth Wakefield will be offering free tutorials to train up a new wave of wiki-editors who will be encouraged to expand on pre-existing articles about women artists and to create new records where previously there were none.

Women and allies of all genders, including non-binary gender identities, are welcome. Please bring your laptop, power cable and ideas for entries that need updating or creating. If you do not know where to start, do not fear, as we will also provide some suggestions of women in the arts that are, as yet, currently under-represented on Wikipedia.

Wiki training will be provided, as will refreshments and reference material. If you do not have a laptop or are unable to bring one for whatever reason please email {{nospam|hollygrange|hepworthwakefield.org}} and one can be provided.

The session will be fluid all day with Wikipedia teaching and support available and resources/experts on hand to help identify and improve target articles.
