Gwenwynwyn ab Owain Cyfeiliog
Hi everybody! Can someone help me with this: how is pronounced the Welsh name "Gwenwynwyn" (as in Gwenwynwyn ab Owain) - you can use the IPA... And is there a English or French or Latin equivalent for this name? Thanks!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.115.107.43 (talk • contribs) 11:25, 12 November 2007 UTC
:I guess "gwen-unwin", but a Welsh speaker can surely do better. That is my estimate based on the way his name was apparently pronounced in Latin, which we can see thanks to [http://www.llgc.org.uk/index.php?id=stratamarcella this awesome website] full of medieval charters. His name is spelled variously in Latin there - Wennunwen ([http://www.llgc.org.uk/ystradmarchell/ymc0005.html], [http://www.llgc.org.uk/ystradmarchell/ymc_s007.htm], [http://www.llgc.org.uk/ystradmarchell/ymc_s012.htm], [http://www.llgc.org.uk/ystradmarchell/ymc_s013.htm], [http://www.llgc.org.uk/ystradmarchell/ymc_s015.htm], [http://www.llgc.org.uk/ystradmarchell/ymc_s017.htm]), Guenoingven ([http://www.llgc.org.uk/ystradmarchell/ymc_s003.htm]), Wenunwyn ([http://www.llgc.org.uk/ystradmarchell/ymc_s008.htm]), Wenuinwin ([http://www.llgc.org.uk/ystradmarchell/ymc_s010.htm]), Wenunwen ([http://www.llgc.org.uk/ystradmarchell/ymc_s011.htm]), Wennuinwin ([http://www.llgc.org.uk/ystradmarchell/ymc_s016.htm]), and Wenunwin ([http://www.llgc.org.uk/ystradmarchell/ymc_s026.htm]). :My guess: [ˈgwenwənwɨn], although with those old Welsh names the stress is sometimes different; if that's the case, it may be [gwɛnˈwənwɨn] or [gwɛnwəˈnwɨːn]. Strad 19:09, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
