{{sock list|1=SamuelLion1877|2=ByzantineIsRoman|tools_link=yes}}

Though ByzantineIsNotRoman and SamuelLion1877 don't have any direct overlaps, they both have a near-exclusive focus on wars and battles. They mainly focus on ones in Eastern Europe, the Near East, or the Middle East. For example, SL [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Russo-Turkish_War_(1877%E2%80%931878)&diff=prev&oldid=1187594967 edited Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878)] and BINR edited [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Russo-Turkish_War_(1686%E2%80%931700)&diff=prev&oldid=1164758024 Russo-Turkish War (1686–1700)]. Both are particularly focused on infobox edits involving results or casualty counts.

I got clued into this after blocking Special:Contributions/2600:6C51:427F:2100:0:0:0:0/64, which was redoing some of SL's edits at Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878) after their block ([https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Russo-Turkish_War_(1877%E2%80%931878)&diff=prev&oldid=1187594967 SL's edit on 30 November], [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:SamuelLion1877&diff=prev&oldid=1187622277 SL blocked on 30 November], [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Russo-Turkish_War_(1877%E2%80%931878)&diff=prev&oldid=1187594967 the IP's edit on 1 December]). The same /64 was [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&logid=151137809 blocked in August] by {{u|Materialscientist}} as an IP sock of ByzantineIsNotRoman. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 03:00, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

:I'll post more tomorrow, but before I head off to bed I want to point out that I missed the existence of {{noping|ByzantineIsRoman}}, an editor that is also interested in wars/battles from the same regions, and who [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Russo-Turkish_War_(1877%E2%80%931878)&diff=prev&oldid=1187855398 posted on 1 December] at Talk:Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878) to support the same infobox casualty edit that SL and the IP were making. The timing of BIR's appearance is suspicious, as it came a day after SL's block, and because BIR had never previously edited that particular talk page or article. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 05:02, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

  • {{u|Sir Sputnik}}, sorry about two mistakes one my part. First, I forgot that August (BINR's last active date) was so long ago (wow!), and second, I neglected to add BIR as a suspected sock. Technically BIR would be the sockmaster, as the oldest account. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 23:41, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
  • :Hey {{u|bradv}}. Thanks for blocking BIR and SL. Any thoughts on the connection to BINR? And any opinion on how to merge the cases? Both to BIR maybe? Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 03:34, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

{{sock list|1=Friuli1212|tools_link=yes}}

Friuli1212's edits involve various changes and deletions of (usually) well-sourced information relating to military history, mostly in North Africa and the Middle East, which is what most of ByzantineIsNotRoman's edits were about too. ByzantineIsNotRoman also edit-warred on some particular articles and Friuli1212 is repeating some of the same reverted changes on some of the same articles.

In particular, see these examples:

  • Eighth Crusade: compare [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Eighth_Crusade&diff=prev&oldid=1166027435] & [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Eighth_Crusade&diff=prev&oldid=1169611779] (and much subsequent edit-warring) with [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Eighth_Crusade&diff=prev&oldid=1188553657].
  • Barbary Crusade: compare [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Barbary_Crusade&diff=prev&oldid=1169478605] & [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Barbary_Crusade&diff=prev&oldid=1169525767] with [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Barbary_Crusade&diff=prev&oldid=1188555186].
  • Battle of Ain Jalut: Both accounts made arbitrary changes to the number of combatants, not identical in the exact numbers they left behind but a similar reduction that ignores the already cited sources: [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Battle_of_Ain_Jalut&diff=prev&oldid=1166353663], [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Battle_of_Ain_Jalut&diff=prev&oldid=1166222370], compared with [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Battle_of_Ain_Jalut&diff=prev&oldid=1188553975]

Kaspersky205 (CA) was created on 12 December, and four minutes after NuancedProwler (CA), who was blocked by {{u|Bbb23}} (block details) as a suspected sockpuppet of ByzantineIsNotRoman (creation of relevant category), on 15 December; it appears this was due to the activity of Antonio1968x – a confirmed sockpuppet of ByzantineIsNotRoman (relevant category) – in the page Mozambican War of Independence. Antonio1968x (diff1, diff2), NuancedProwler (diff1, diff2, diff3), and Kaspersky205 (diff) have all tried to add the same information to the infobox of the aforementioned article. I could add more. {{sock list|1=CaesarsTopGuyngl|tools_link=yes}}

CaesarsTopGuyngl was created on 17 December 2023, soon after Kaspersky205 (CA) was blocked by {{u|Bbb23}} as the latest sock of ByzantineIsNotRoman. CaesarsTopGuyngl initially made a few edits to random articles before reinstating Kaspersky205 and IP's edits to the Balkan Wars article. [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Balkan_Wars&diff=prev&oldid=1190074345] [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Balkan_Wars&diff=prev&oldid=1190226431 ] [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Balkan_Wars&diff=prev&oldid=1190252986] [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Balkan_Wars&diff=prev&oldid=1190449052] [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Balkan_Wars&diff=next&oldid=1190452442]

On 21 December 03:02, four days after creation of the account and after making several more edits to achieve confirmed user status, CaesarsTopGuyngl edited the semi-protected Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878) article [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Russo-Turkish_War_(1877%E2%80%931878)&diff=prev&oldid=1191020026] This had previously been heavily edited by one of BINR's socks SamuelLion1877 and related IP (CA) [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Russo-Turkish_War_(1877%E2%80%931878)&diff=prev&oldid=1187594967] [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Russo-Turkish_War_(1877%E2%80%931878)&diff=next&oldid=1187778425] (which had led to {{u|Firefangledfeathers}}'s [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/ByzantineIsNotRoman/Archive initial SPI report on BINR]). :I am sorry it has come to this. I genuinely fail to see how any of this you posted is reasonable evidence to back up your allegations. I read and noticed a few (3) coincidental edit overlaps with the sock users you mentioned, in which case I apologize for the confusion and in the future I would be more than happy and willing to expand my editing range, but that is a separate issue entirely. I have attempted twice [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Vanezi_Astghik&diff=prev&oldid=1208820256 1] [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:JeanCesarGraziani&diff=prev&oldid=1208813361 2] to compromise, be civil, and reason with you. I even reverted my edit here [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_anthropogenic_disasters_by_death_toll&diff=prev&oldid=1208819350 3] at the anthro disasters article upon learning of the sock edit and the inflation that my edit caused. I also (in line with your edits) removed the nation of Armenia as a perpetrator for the persecution of Ottoman Muslims [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Persecution_of_Muslims_during_the_Ottoman_contraction&diff=prev&oldid=1208818086 4] since it wouldn't be accurate to list the modern Armenian nation as responsible for actions committed by (some) Armenian auxiliaries/gangs/irregulars in Russian and French service. Again, I apologize for the accidental restoration edits of a sock user, I genuinely had no clue and am still learning many basics of Wikipedia editing. With all due respect, this feels either like a simple misunderstanding or an attempt to maliciously retaliate over an editing dispute. I kindly ask that you reconsider. Thank you. {{sock list|1=Aliy Dawut|tools_link=yes}}

The user Aliy_Dawut was created on 30 April 2024 (CA), or about a month after the last sockpuppets of ByzantineIsNotRoman were blocked; User:LoneWolf803 on 30 March 2024 (here), and User:JeanCesarGraziani on 4 April 2024 (here). Some time has elapsed since then, and I don't know if there is sufficient data for CU to be used; however, if that's the case, there are some associated IPs (IP1, IP2, IP3) and an IP range (this one) that were mentioned in previous reports, and might prove useful.

There is not much overlap in terms of specific pages, but it is reasonable and expected for a sockmaster who has attempted to evade their block with at least 16 sockpuppets already, to be careful in terms of their activity. Regardless of that, even for the most active sockpuppets of User:ByzantineIsNotRoman, User:SamuelLion1877 and User:LoneWolf803, with hundreds of contributions respectively, there is overlap in only three articles, and one of those (the talk page of Persecution of Muslims during the Ottoman contraction) happens to have also been edited by the reported User:Aliy_Dawut ({{Plain link|url=https://sigma.toolforge.org/editorinteract.py?users=SamuelLion1877&users=LoneWolf803&users=Aliy%20Dawut EIA}}). Interestingly, User:Aliy_Dawut thought it was necessary to emphasize that they "came across this page [that day] for the first time", before proceeding to request the addition of information concerning the "perpetrators" and "death toll" in the infobox of the aforementioned page (diff); the sockpuppet User:SamuelLion1877 had previously added relevant information in the infobox (diff), as did 2600:1012:B182:2A47:BC6F:5A05:7FEF:CD54 (related to the aforementioned IPs); all later removed, which would explain their request. Besides that, both the reported User:Aliy_Dawut, and the confirmed sockpuppet User:SamuelLion1877 in particular, focus on atrocities against certain populations; for example, compare the {{Plain link|url=https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions/SamuelLion1877&target=SamuelLion1877&offset=&limit=500 contributions of User:SamuelLion1877}} (a cursory look will show what I mean), to the articles listed in the {{Plain link|url=https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Aliy_Dawut&oldid=1244561157 userpage of Aliy_Dawut}}:

Furthermore, User:Aliy_Dawut's timecard is showing a similar pattern of activity to that of sockmaster User:ByzantineIsNotRoman, and their most active (in terms of contributions) confirmed sockpuppets. Specifically, compare the following timecards, where it is evident that there is a common lack of activity during the same period of the day; approximately between 8:00–15:00 UTC:

  • Timecard of User:Aliy_Dawut ({{Plain link|url=https://xtools.wmcloud.org/ec-timecard/en.wikipedia.org/Aliy%20Dawut here}})
  • Timecard of sockmaster User:ByzantineIsNotRoman ({{Plain link|url=https://xtools.wmcloud.org/ec-timecard/en.wikipedia.org/ByzantineIsNotRoman here}})
  • Timecard of confirmed sockpuppet User:ByzantineIsRoman ({{Plain link|url=https://xtools.wmcloud.org/ec-timecard/en.wikipedia.org/ByzantineIsRoman here}})
  • Timecard of confirmed sockpuppet User:SamuelLion1877 ({{Plain link|url=https://xtools.wmcloud.org/ec-timecard/en.wikipedia.org/SamuelLion1877 here}})
  • Timecard of confirmed sockpuppet User:LoneWolf803 ({{Plain link|url=https://xtools.wmcloud.org/ec-timecard/en.wikipedia.org/LoneWolf803 here}})

The above suggests that the editor would be asleep during this period; this is also corroborated by the geolocation of the aforementioned IPs, where the respective timezones would reflect night-time and morning hours. Demetrios1993 (talk) 01:59, 9 September 2024 (UTC)

Comment: {{u|Griboski}}, thanks for the additional evidence. I should note that {{noping|Aliy Dawut}} got blocked on 10 October (block details). {{u|Izno}}, there are no current active issues; the case can be closed now. Demetrios1993 (talk) 18:18, 13 October 2024 (UTC)

There is some overlap in articles edited between all the previous socks of ByzantineisNotRoman. Papal States and Christopher Columbus are specific and in the case of the former, obscure enough that this recent editor and a previous sock editing it while also having a primary interest in atrocities against groups would be rare. [https://sigma.toolforge.org/timeline.py?page=Papal_States&users=Antonio1968x&users=JeanCesarGraziani&users=2600%3A1012%3AB16F%3A74EE%3A8C43%3A5B59%3AE439%3AC59&users=Kaspersky205&users=Friuli1212&users=CaesarsTopGuyngl&users=Aliy+Dawut&users=SamuelLion1877&users=LoneWolf803&users=ByzantineIsRoman&users=ByzantineIsNotRoman&server=enwiki] [https://sigma.toolforge.org/timeline.py?page=Christopher_Columbus&users=Antonio1968x&users=JeanCesarGraziani&users=2600%3A1012%3AB16F%3A74EE%3A8C43%3A5B59%3AE439%3AC59&users=Kaspersky205&users=Friuli1212&users=CaesarsTopGuyngl&users=Aliy+Dawut&users=SamuelLion1877&users=LoneWolf803&users=ByzantineIsRoman&users=ByzantineIsNotRoman&server=enwiki] CaesarsTopGuyngl capitalized an instance of the word "pope" [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?diff=prev&oldid=1190930798], whereas Aliy Dawut did the opposite, by uncapitalizing an instance of the word "Pope" [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?diff=prev&oldid=1236714336]. Most likely because the latter noted the correction by R_Prazeres, who had previously reverted the respective edit of sockpuppet CaesarsTopGuyngl [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Papal_States&diff=next&oldid=1190930798].

Like Demetrios said, it is not surprising that someone with so many socks would take a break, edit other topics and choose an unsuspecting username in order to avoid being caught but the underlying behavior and data gives it away. --Griboski (talk) 16:28, 12 October 2024 (UTC)

  • The best data I can provide here is that the geolocation/network is similar to {{noping|LoneWolf803}}. {{behav}}. Naming is pretty different if we're looking at this behaviorally. In the future, try to report new socks within about 2 months of their activity start. Izno (talk) 03:29, 2 October 2024 (UTC)

{{sock list|1=165.237.199.136/29|tools_link=yes}}

The reported IP range is rather short, affecting only eight addresses. It appears to be used by {{noping|ByzantineIsNotRoman}} to evade their block. For example, the sockmaster was somewhat obsessed with trying to add a 5.5-million death toll estimate by controversial scholar Justin McCarthy in the infobox of Persecution of Muslims during the Ottoman contraction; this obsession appears to be shared with the editor behind this IP range. Compare the following diffs:

Aslo, note the discussion {{slink|User talk:Bogazicili|Persecution of Muslims during the Ottoman contraction, could you consider inserting the inclusion of McCarthy’s 5,500,000 figure in the infobox?}}, showing 165.237.199.136 trying to persuade another editor to make their edit for them.

Furthermore, there is some additional overlap between 165.237.199.140 and sockpuppets {{noping|SamuelLion1877}} and {{noping|LoneWolf803}}; check {{Plain link|url=https://sigma.toolforge.org/editorinteract.py?users=SamuelLion1877&users=LoneWolf803&users=165.237.199.140 this EIA}}. Lastly, this particular IP address geolocates to the area of southwestern California; as did other relevant IP addresses mentioned in the archived investigations.
