The model letters set out below are meant to be sent to web sites (and their service providers) in order to explain the requirements of the CC-BY-SA and GFDL, and to urge compliance. This page is part of Wikipedia:Mirrors and Forks. The original letters on this page were based on [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:MartinHarper/Abacci_Letter&oldid=1256067 User:MyRedDice/Abacci Letter]. Note:
- These letters are intended for material that is dually licensed under CC-BY-SA and GFDL, as most of Wikipedia's articles are (since June 15, 2009). If an article is only licensed under CC-BY-SA (look at the footer and talk page of the article), you should instead send a Standard CC BY-SA violation letter.
Warning:
- You can only file a lawsuit (or file a DMCA take down notice) if you hold a significant copyright interest in one or more articles.

Dear
I have noticed that you are making use of English Wikipedia articles as part of your website,
If you wish to license the material under CC BY-SA, at the bottom of every page that uses Wikipedia material, you can include text similar to, "This page is based on the copyrighted Wikipedia article (put article name here); it is used under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-SA). You may redistribute it, verbatim or modified, providing that you comply with the terms of the CC BY-SA." You should link the text "Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License" to a copy of the text of the CC BY-SA. Also, we strongly recommend that you link back to the original Wikipedia article; the alternative is to list all authors of the article on your own server.
If you wish to license the material under GFDL, at the bottom of every page that uses Wikipedia material, you can instead include text similar to, "This page is based on the copyrighted Wikipedia article (put article name here); it is used under the GNU Free Documentation License. You may redistribute it, verbatim or modified, providing that you comply with the terms of the GFDL." You should link the text "GNU Free Documentation License" to a copy of the text of the GFDL on your own server. Also, we strongly recommend that you link back to the original Wikipedia article; this is a means to comply with certain GFDL requirements.
Thank you for your cooperation.

I am pleased to see that your website,
However, you must follow the licensing terms which govern all Wikipedia text. Most of Wikipedia's content, including the text you are using, is dually licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-SA 4.0) and the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts). The text of these licenses, the relevant legally binding documents, can be found at
First, I would like to point out that when you use content from Wikipedia you should include a link back to the source Wikipedia article as is suggested at that page. Additionally, you should also include a CC BY-SA notice, a GFDL notice, or both. You could, for example, add the text "This article is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License, which means that you can copy and modify it as long as the entire work (including additions) remains under this license", and provide a link to a copy of the CC BY-SA. Text such as "This page contains text from Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia" is a good way to acknowledge the general source of the text.

I am delighted to see that your service provider, (ISP NAME), hosts a website, (SITE NAME) at
However, (SITE NAME) does not currently comply fully with the terms of either license. For instance, the duplicated content must link to one or both of the CC BY-SA license and the GFDL, and must attribute its original source. As a result, (SITE NAME) includes unauthorized duplicates of Wikipedia content. Moreover, I have been unable to reach the site maintainers. Multiple requests have been sent to (SITE EMAIL) regarding this oversight without response; the last such request is appended below.
As you are the Designated Agent for (ISP NAME), I am sending you this formal takedown request as a last resort.
