In American English, {{xt|U.S.}} (with points) is more common as the standard abbreviation for {{xt|United States}}, although The Chicago Manual of Style now deprecates the use of the periods (16th ed.). {{xt|US}} (without points) is generally accepted in most other national forms of English.
