Soft redirect to WikiSpecies which disguises the fact that no Wiki article exists. A bad substitute for
- Comment - {{reply to|Narky Blert}} It follows the style of other singular specialized soft redirect templates (viz. {{tl|Wiktionary redirect}}, {{tl|Wikibooks redirect}}, {{tl|Wikiquote redirect}}, {{tl|Wikisource redirect}}, {{tl|Wikivoyage redirect}}, and {{tl|Commons redirect}}). — Godsy (TALKCONT) 03:23, 20 May 2017 (UTC)
::With the exception of {{tl|Wiktionary redirect}} all of the cross Wikimedia soft redirect templates mentioned above are essentially unused in article space. Delete them all. Do we really need {{tl|Wikibooks redirect}} to get people to https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Transwiki:Geordie_dialect_words and https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Structured_Query_Language/SQLSTATE?Plantdrew (talk) 03:47, 20 May 2017 (UTC)
:::{{reply to|Plantdrew}} I believe the intended purpose is to keep {{tl|soft redirect}} out of the mainspace, maintain separate categories for each sister site, and offer a bit more explanation to readers reaching the page. Personally, I monitor them (e.g. watch for new ones, make sure a good local target doesn't exist, and check that they are not entirely inappropriate). — Godsy (TALKCONT) 04:31, 20 May 2017 (UTC)
- Delete One use of this template in article space. There are better ways to do cross Wikimedia links. Plantdrew (talk) 03:47, 20 May 2017 (UTC)
- {{reply to|Plantdrew}} Just want to point out that Template:Soft redirect has {{plainlink|url=https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3AWhatLinksHere&target=Template%3ASoft+redirect&namespace=0|name=0}} transclusions within the mainspace in case that is one of the ways you were alluding to. — Godsy (TALKCONT) 04:02, 20 May 2017 (UTC)
- Delete per nom. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:42, 20 May 2017 (UTC)
- Comment - Topics with a less-than-encyclopedic scope that are either commonly wikified words or are repeatedly recreated may become soft redirects to Wikimedia sister projects within the mainspace (WP:SRD and Wikipedia:Wikimedia sister projects#Soft redirects from Wikipedia to a sister project). Specialized soft redirect templates are used in these cases instead of plain {{tl|soft redirect}}. Deleting this template implicitly states that soft redirects to Wikispecies should not be created. — Godsy (TALKCONT) 05:27, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
:WT:WikiProject Redirect, WT:Soft redirect, and WT:Wikimedia sister projects have been notified about this discussion. — Godsy (TALKCONT) 05:36, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
- Keep. I think what needs to happen first of all is a policy discussion somewhere about whether soft redirects to Wikispecies are seen as a good thing. If the conclusion is that we should have them in at least some circumstances then we should keep this template as the correct way to do them. If the other hand the conclusion is that we should not have them, then probably the best thing to do is to convert the template with an error message that informs people trying to use it of this consensus view and what the preferred alternative(s) is/are. In neither scenario is deletion the best course of action. Thryduulf (talk) 07:58, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
- Keep per the first two sentences of the comment made above by Thryduulf. Also, redirects are not just for linking, they also serve to aid searches. — Godsy (TALKCONT) 20:22, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
- Delete if the mainspace transclusion is deleted. Jc86035 (talk) Use {{re|Jc86035}}

Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 17:56, 4 June 2017 (UTC)
- Keep if the relevant transclusion is kept; weak keep if not. I disagree with the nominator's rationale that this template "disguises" the fact that we have no article. I think it is a clear admission that we have no article and have decided to send our reader somewhere more useful. It is well in line with the spirit of {{tl|wi}} that we have an equivalent redirect for topics covered by Species that we don't. Deryck C. 15:40, 6 June 2017 (UTC)
- Keep per Deryck. -- Tavix (talk) 18:25, 6 June 2017 (UTC)
