I've been eyeing these two templates for some time and they really overlap just one is digital payments by mobile and one perhaps presumed to be by computer(???). Propose merging Template:Annual archive with Template:Archive.

{{tl|Archive}} is used on 320,000 pages and creates navigational links. As of [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Module%3AArchive&diff=1262572378&oldid=1259214870 12 December 2024], it makes navigational links for some annual archives from the page's title. Per the explanations at Template talk:Archive, the sandbox version of the module detects annual archives. The sandbox version can then display the same links that {{tl|annual archive}} displays; both invoke {{tl|yearly archive list}} to do so.

Module:Archive/sandbox does not need the many parameters given to {{tl|annual archive}} because it can extract them from the title of the archive page. If the sandbox version is moved live, {{tl|annual archive}} could be converted into a redirect.

Note: By default, the sandbox version uses the same banner text for sequential and annual archives. It's possible for {{tl|archive}} to output banner text very similar to {{tl|annual archive}} with any one of (a) a parameter like {{para|type|annual}} similar to {{para|type|index}}, (b) auto-detection similar to the years (but this could be a breaking change for many pages), or (c) the template's existing {{para|text}} parameter that allows for any custom banner message.

  • I have a question. The reason I use the one template over the other in my talk page archives is that it makes navigation between the various archives easier.   • ::@Clovermoss, numbered navigation like that will not be affected. To double-check, you can add {{archive/sandbox}} below {{Talkarchivenav}} and preview the page to compare the two. In Module:Archive/sandbox, the changes starting at line 423 check to see if the archive page (a) ends with a plausible year (20XX), (b) has no matching "/Archive 2" page (on the chance that the module is invoked from a noticeboard that could reach over 2000 numbered archives), and (c) is not specifying {{para|next}} or {{para|prev}} (for pages that have switched from one archiving scheme to another). The format change only happens if all 3 are true ("Archive 20XX", no "Archive/2", and no "prev/next" specified).
