The WikiPack Africa Project is a m:WikiAfrica project launched in 2016. It amalgamates:

  • the coding of a software, WikiFundi, that provides off-line editing environment that mimics the Wikipedia environment.
  • the creation of action packs for use by local Wikimedia chapters, user groups or isolated individuals in Africa, and
  • a Wikipedia Writing Contest that run in African Schools, WikiChallenge African Schools

It rolled out in two phases :

  • Phase 1 involved the creation of the Wikipack Africa. Wikipack Africa is a digital kit located via a local network device (Raspberry PI). The local network device provides access to an off-line editing platform (WikiFundi) that mimics Wikipedia, and provides related materials and additional OER resources. The Wikipack Africa will both facilitate the outreach work of Wikimedia chapters, User Group and individuals, and encourage the growth of digital skills and content contribution by teachers and students across Africa.
  • Phase 2 featured a writing contest, the #WikiChallenge African Schools used the WikiFundi software to facilitate an entertaining, powerful, collaborative and interactive content creation competition between schools in Guinée, Mali, Tunisia, and Madagascar.

The project has been conceptualised and conceived by Florence Devouard and Isla Haddow-Flood.

The project is run in partnership with Wikimedia CH and has the support of [http://www.fondationorange.com/en Fondation Orange] and has been primarily implemented by Florence, Isla and Emmanuel Engelhart from May 2016 until Spring 2018.

The project proposal, its documentation and its outcomes are under a CC BY SA 4.0 licence.

The second version of the project launched early 2018. It was carried by Anthere (Florence Devouard) and Isla from the [http://www.wikiinafrica.org Wiki in Africa] association and was supported by the [https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/WikiInAfrica/WikiFundi Wikimedia Foundation].

A third version of the software is under work in 2021. The French and English versions are updated and the navigation in the software improved. A brand new language is added : Spanish. It is carried by Anthere (Florence Devouard), Renaud Gaudin from Kiwix and some Spanish editors. It is supported by Wikimedia CH. All details about this version at m:WikiFundi/2021.
