Avoid fake news by thoroughly scrutinising the reliability of a source before using it. Primary sources are not necessarily excluded, however:
- The reliability of a primary source may be more difficult to assess for an ongoing event (in case of doubt: better not to use the source)
- Basic reporting based on secondary sources should never be overshadowed by primary source content
Help for assessing the reliability of a source, in a given context, may be obtained at Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard (WP:RSN): in order to obtain a swift reply there, which would be usually desirable for an ongoing event, post the request according to the recommended format, which includes a clear indication of source, article and content.
