Promotional?
Can someone contribute their opinions at this talk page discussion about adding a blog as external link? The edits appears promotional. There is also confirmed WP:COI. Shouldn't this be a problem? 2409:4073:2E8B:56A4:F0E7:6758:BC8C:816D (talk) 14:59, 15 February 2025 (UTC)
:{{replyto|2409:4073:2E8B:56A4:F0E7:6758:BC8C:816D|RubyRyder}} Yes, this is a problem. RubyRyder has a duty to declare a conflict of interest if that user chooses to use a self-published source in an article. If the user is not paid, the user would use Template:Connected contributor at the top of the talk page. If the user is paid, the user uses Template:Connected contributor (paid) instead. Also, we generally do not cite blogs. See WP:BLOGS. Z. Patterson (talk) 15:05, 15 February 2025 (UTC)

What about school?
What if a student made an article about their school(an institution with which they have a relationship), would that be considered COI? Codonified (talk) 23:44, 28 February 2025 (UTC)
:The community has generally felt that this is not a COI. On the other hand, someone who is paid by that school (such as a teacher or administrator) would have a COI. (An analogy is that someone who has a hobby does not necessarily have a COI with respect to that hobby, but someone who has a business interest in the hobby does have a COI. Likewise, being a fan of a celebrity is not a COI, but having a business relationship with that celebrity is.) --Tryptofish (talk) 00:13, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
::Oh thanks, and what if the school told the editor(the student) to make an article on them and he does so without pay? Codonified (talk) 00:19, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
::I disagree. Students and graduates clearly have a vested interest in making their schools appear to be prestigious or high quality - or in some rare cases where they have an axe to grind they take the other approach. It's not a massive conflict like being paid to edit an article but it is a conflict.
::And to answer Codonified's second question: A student who has been directed to edit an article by someone with whom they have a relationship clearly has a conflict of interest. Whether it's a major conflict that most editors believe should preclude that person from making those editos or a minor conflict that many editors may choose to overlook will depend on the exact circumstances. ElKevbo (talk) 01:16, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
:::You explain such nuances very well, I concur with your reasoning, may I continue to ask you more of such questions, so that you can help me understand wp better ? Codonified (talk) 01:48, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
::::I agree that if a student is assigned or otherwise instructed to write about the school, that is a conflict of interest. The issue is not pay, alone, but whether there are tangible benefits to be gained. I strongly disagree that all students and alumni have a de facto COI, and I think that's an idiosyncratic opinion that is not widely shared. --Tryptofish (talk) 23:23, 1 March 2025 (UTC)
:::::well then, you see this draft called Shaheed kazi school, the creator of this draft has said on his user page that he is a student of this school, for more see his user talk where he admits he is a student of that school,

::::::In what way is that student benefiting from Wikipedia having that content, other than just feeling good? --Tryptofish (talk) 17:03, 4 March 2025 (UTC)
:::::::I don't know, I just gave this to understand whether this constitutes COI, since I didn't understood it, I asked you since you know better than me, whatever is your opinion is mine as well :) Codonified (talk) 17:07, 4 March 2025 (UTC)
::::::::OK, that's fine! To answer my own question, it seems to me that there is no evidence of anything other than feeling good. I'm seeing, in that user talk page discussion, some feel-good school spirit, but I'm not seeing any material or tangible benefit. Nothing about getting some sort of advantage in something real-life, and certainly no evidence of being compensated for edits or having been assigned by the school to edit. By what I understand to be longstanding consensus at Wikipedia, that's not a COI (although, as seen above, some editors have dissenting opinions about it). --Tryptofish (talk) 17:12, 4 March 2025 (UTC)
:::::::::Thank you for helping me understand COI Codonified (talk) 18:30, 4 March 2025 (UTC)
Former co-worker
Is it a COI to write about a former co-worker, where there exists no active relationship? Jay 💬 08:05, 4 April 2025 (UTC)
:There are a lot of potential gray areas there. It depends on whether there is something that remains from that relationship, that would bias (either positively or negatively) how you would write about the person. Even without an active relationship, there could perhaps be active strong feelings, and you would have to evaluate whether any such feelings would affect your ability to maintain NPOV, and whether it might be best to disclose the past relationship to other editors in the interests of transparency. --Tryptofish (talk) 19:54, 4 April 2025 (UTC)
::Thanks! This is more or less in tune with what I said at {{slink|User talk:Azbuffalo88|COI}} then. Jay 💬 10:25, 5 April 2025 (UTC)
Help?
With regard to User talk:Junekramer1, the editor appears to both have a COI with Paul Bilzerian ([https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Junekramer1 edit history], took [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Paul_Bilzerian_2008.jpg the photo of subject]).
And has now repeatedly [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Paul_Bilzerian&diff=prev&oldid=1288606172 deleted large amounts of cited material] from the Paul Bilzerian.
And in an effort to keep that article with the cited material deleted - [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Requests_for_page_protection/Increase&diff=prev&oldid=1288720505 has asked for page protection] perhaps to keep their preferred version of the page - with proper material deleted - intact. What is the best path forward to address this? Thank you. 184.153.21.19 (talk) 16:51, 4 May 2025 (UTC)
:It would be better to post this at WP:COIN, rather than here. --Tryptofish (talk) 18:50, 4 May 2025 (UTC)
