Newspapers.com
Hi all, and thank you so much for your work on the amazing Wikipedia Library. In the new era of newspapers.com, after the original login account system, I was re-approved for newspapers.com but when I surf to WP:LIBRARY and click through, it launches newspapers.com and I'm logged in via my account I made when Wikipedia Library started, but I have no access. I see the button for "try 7 days free" while I'm logged in there, and nothing really works. BTW, I don't see how to request access to a new site.
- Can you fix my newspapers.com account?
- How do I request access to newspaperarchive.com?
- Is my newspapers.com username-and-password account obsolete or is it required in addition to authentication by surfing through WP:LIBRARY?
— Smuckola(talk) 02:47, 20 April 2025 (UTC)
:See [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T322916#10168173 this announcement] - the account is required. Nikkimaria (talk) 02:55, 20 April 2025 (UTC)
::{{reply to|Nikkimaria}} Okay so what about any of the rest of my post, like where I said it just doesn't work? And....the rest? In my Wikipedia Library collection, Newspapers.com says "Expiry date: Feb 02, 2026" and newspaperarchive has the "access collection" button so I guess it expired but it used to work. I'm logged into my original newspapers.com account that you set up for me in the earliest days, it has my username in the top right of the page, and yet nothing works, I can't access any content, and it has the "try 7 days free" button. I tried a "private window" in Firefox too, also browsing directly to newspapers.com, with the same result. — Smuckola(talk) 08:33, 30 April 2025 (UTC)
:::If the Newspapers.com account hasn't expired yet, it should still work, but it's managed by Newspapers.com - you'd need to get in touch with their support if your account is not working. Newspaperarchive is a separate thing and should work by clicking on the 'access collection' button under Newspaperarchive. Nikkimaria (talk) 23:56, 30 April 2025 (UTC)
::::{{reply to|Nikkimaria}} OK I will contact newspapers.com.
::::Yeah I agree that newspaperarchive should work! :) So what now? Thanks! — Smuckola(talk) 01:20, 1 May 2025 (UTC)
:::::What do you see when you click on 'access collection' [https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/partners/27/ here] and try to read an article? Nikkimaria (talk) 01:22, 1 May 2025 (UTC)
::::::Great Pendergast's ghost! It works. It works by the URL you gave and by browsing from scratch via WP:LIBRARY. I see "Welcome to NewspaperArchive Provided for you by Wikimedia Foundation" and I see pictures of dead trees from 1897! OK now I'm not sure why I was failing to get any search results the last several times I tried! lol, thanks. And the system-wide search is great, with EBSCO results and all.
::::::I await a response from newspapers.com! Thank you to everyone for everything. — Smuckola(talk) 02:19, 1 May 2025 (UTC)
::::::{{reply to|Nikkimaria}} Hooray, they set me at "Complimentary Publisher Extra® Annual" status and the account works now. Thanks. — Smuckola(talk) 01:40, 3 May 2025 (UTC)
SAGE and The BMJ can't be accessed anymore
It seems that SAGE Journals dan the BMJ are no longer available for all The Wikipedia Library users Antya Anantari (talk) 04:24, 25 April 2025 (UTC)
:@Antya Anantari: BMJ still works fine for me. See phab:T391570 for SAGE journals. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 17:27, 25 April 2025 (UTC)
::My bad, The BMJ is working fine now after I change my browser Antya Anantari (talk) 01:24, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
Locked out of Newspapers.com again
I originally lost access to Newspapers.com when they changed the way they required us to log in. That was in February 2024, but I didn't report it at Phabricator until April 2024. In November I heard we could apply for access, so I did. Earlier this month I lost access again, even though my expiry date isn't until November 17. I reapplied, as you can see [https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/applications/evaluate/22733/ here]. But I've heard NOTHING. What should I do? Newspapers.com is so vital for finding sources and also for establishing notability for articles. I'd be so grateful for help! Oona Wikiwalker (talk) 07:49, 25 April 2025 (UTC)
:Hi @Oona Wikiwalker - it is no longer possible to access newspapers.com via proxy, but if you have reapplied for access and have an approved date in the future, you just need to sign in at: https://www.newspapers.com/signin/?next_url=/? using the email associated with your Wikipedia account and a password. If you do not have a password, just click the forgot your password to create one. Regards, Goldsztajn (talk) 23:46, 27 April 2025 (UTC)
::Hi @Goldsztajn. Does that mean we can't log in from the library anymore? I've had a free Newspapers.com account via my Ancestry.com account for years before I came to Wikipedia. That account uses my genealogy email address. I can't clip articles with that account. I never use it because all my genealogical research is in Europe anyway.
::When I try to sign in to Newspapers.com with the email I use for Wikipedia and follow your instructions, I don't get an email.
::Before a few weeks ago, I was able to use Newspapers.com just fine. I would be really grateful for help! Oona Wikiwalker (talk) 10:23, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
How to pick the right database to search?
A while ago I was looking through all the help pages here trying to get access The Financial Review (Australian newspaper). I ended up emailing someone with private access.
However, the access was available all along by opening the ProQuest database in TWL and searching (no extra sign-up through newspapers.com required). There are great articles from other newspapers there too.
How was I meant to know to use ProQuest, is there a help page or index for dummies somewhere? It seems similar to the question about about how to find Lancet articles on meta; you search the Science Direct database I think.
P.S. @Oona Wikiwalker: you may have some luck with a ProQuest search while you wait for your newspapers.com issue to be resolved. Commander Keane (talk) 00:26, 26 April 2025 (UTC)
:I often use the Zeitschriftendatenbank to look for a particular scholarly journal. But as this database focuses on German and Austrian library holdings perhaps it isn't the right tool for your specific use case. HHill (talk) 09:13, 27 April 2025 (UTC)
Newspaper.com account
Hi,
I applied for access to Newspapers.com and received an email last month saying that I was approved and would receive access details "within a week or two once it has been processed." Newspapers.com shows up as a resource under my collections and shows an expiry date for next year, but when I go to access the resource, it's just the standard page with "free trial" and "sign up" at the top. What am I missing? Spagooder (talk) 20:48, 27 April 2025 (UTC)
:Hi @Spagooder - you can no longer access newspapers.com via proxy - once you have had an account approved you just need to sign in using the email address associated with your Wikipedia account. If you need a password, just use the forgot your password button. Regards, Goldsztajn (talk) 23:41, 27 April 2025 (UTC)
De Gruyter
I understand there's an access problem with this source, is there anything I can do to help? It's the database I use most often. (t · c) buidhe 05:48, 28 April 2025 (UTC)
:It would be absolutely great if access to De Gruyter could be restored following its merger with Brill. In practice, losing De Gruyter means losing access to a third of the papers/books I use TWL for. —Kusma (talk) 13:24, 3 May 2025 (UTC)
::Should be fixed now. This was tracked at phab:T372402 ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 01:00, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
:::Yep seems to be fixed. Thank you! fyi {{u|Kusma}} (t · c) buidhe 09:48, 11 May 2025 (UTC)
I thought I made it available
I made two clippings https://www.newspapers.com/article/winston-salem-journal/172501366/ https://www.newspapers.com/article/winston-salem-journal/172501288/ from newspapers.com and tried to access them while signed out. It didn't work. But I checked the boxes saying they should be accessible to anyone.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 18:36, 16 May 2025 (UTC)
:@Vchimpanzee: Works for me, even when signed out. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 19:11, 16 May 2025 (UTC)
::Not sure what I did wrong, but I am blocked and told to sign in.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 20:04, 16 May 2025 (UTC)
::Wait, the URLs are different. Here are the ones that I can't access.https://www.newspapers.com/image/1189390097/?clipping_id=172501288 https://www.newspapers.com/image/1189390103/?clipping_id=172501366 — Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 20:06, 16 May 2025 (UTC)
:::@Vchimpanzee I believe those second links are what you get to if you click 'into' a clipping, which requests the entire newspaper, while highlighting your clipping, which would require a subscription. The links you shared in your first message are the actual clippings. Sam Walton (talk) 12:06, 17 May 2025 (UTC)
Emerald
Hello. I attempted to access [https://www-emerald-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/insight/content/doi/10.1108/eb035979/full/html this report] available at {{Plain link|https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/partners/56/|Emerald}} to potentially try and expand Singapore Airlines Flight 21A. However, it appears that I either need to access the paper through an institution or purchase the journal. Aren't all journals at Emerald supposed to be free to access if using The Wikipedia Library?
