[[Morrison (surname)]]

I've checked Hanks et al. The Oxford Dictionary of Family Names in Britain and Ireland and it seems the whole Clan Morrison thing is wrong or badly explained. Don't know how to proceed, though.-- Carnby (talk) 07:23, 27 April 2025 (UTC)

:I suspect that much of the text is original research and must be deleted. or exmple:

::{{tq|Scottish records identify a marriage in 1584 between George Morese and Babara Forguson in Aberdeen.[6] Later in other Aberdeen records their names become George Moreson and Barbara Ferguson,[7] then George Morrison and Barbara Ferguson.[8]}}

: is definitely wikipedian's research. So I would be ruthless and cut 80-90% of the text. On the other hand, a dictionary, being WP:TERTIARY source, must be used with caution as well. Some surname dictionaries contain mistakes and are difficult to verify, because they typically do not contain references to verify dubious claims. --Altenmann >talk 13:21, 27 April 2025 (UTC)

Names with a lot of variants

Is there any consistency (or preferred option) as to whether different variations of the same name share an article or not? Some pages, like Galen (given name), collect different variants, but on the other hand we have e.g. Jalen, Jaylan, Jaylen, Jaylin (a redirect to Jaelyn), Jaylon, Jaelen, Jaelin, Jalon, and so on. (I'm also not entirely convinced that these purported "name meanings" are real — does "Jaylon" really come from the Greek word for 'calm'? I imagine most of them are indeed named for Jalen Rose, whose name is a combination of James and Leonard.) eviolite (talk) 04:28, 9 May 2025 (UTC)

:Before discussing your consistency question, I would like do mention another type of consistency which we all wikipedians must follow in articles about names: per WP:RS, we must consistently and mercilessly delete all references for various "baby names" sites/books and the ilk: they almost never trustworthy in nontrivial cases and don't indicate sources of their wisdom. Even if they indicate, we better cite the original respectable, scholarly sources. This is the first thing I did when I looked into the page you mentioned, Jaylon. --Altenmann >talk 05:41, 9 May 2025 (UTC)

:That said, to avoid "content forking", all etymology is best be in a single, most common variant of the name and other must refer to it. Danger of "content forking": different people wrote different texts on basically the same subject and these can easily be inconsistent, contradictory, and incomplete. Of course, if talking about names of different spelling but independently notable in different cultures, they surely can have culture-specific context.

:As for lists, if they are short, they can be in one page, especially if the variants are from the same culture. Some long lists may be even named List of people with surname Smith.

:A good trick for given names is {{starts with|Ivan}} --Altenmann >talk 05:41, 9 May 2025 (UTC)

  • Finally, about Jay* thingy. The purpose of these pages in navigation. SO you have to make a decision what is more convenient for a reader who pecked the name by ear and now, who the heck it was, jaylan, jaylon, jizzlon... In my opinion, similarly-sounding names are better be in a single page. OF course if the names are in different categories, such as "Polish-language surnames" vs. "Spanish-language surnames", then better keep them in different pages. --Altenmann >talk 06:18, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
