Maryna Vroda

Wanted to ask for some assistance in researching whether sufficient archival sourcing can be found to improve an article about a short film from 2011.

The situation is that somebody recently created Maryna Vroda and the Palme d'Or for Best Short Film. Now, obviously that's not how Wikipedia does things — the Short Film Palme d'Or could obviously be discussed in either Maryna Vroda itself or an article about the film that she won it for, but we never need an article that treats an individual filmmaker's win of an individual award as a standalone event in its own right. An editor has already initiated a merge discussion at Talk:Maryna Vroda about merging it into the BLP, but I tried to determine whether there was adequate sourcing available to convert it into an article about the film instead.

However, since the film is 14 years old Google isn't offering up a ton of usable sourcing, and all that was in the article was a bulletpointed list of entirely dead links to a mixture of primary sourcing that wouldn't support notability at all and purported coverage of the award presentation itself, none of which were actually being used to footnote any of the body content. I've taken a stab at it with the sources I have been able to find, so it's now an article about the film itself at the title Cross-Country — but I'm not entirely convinced that I've found enough, so I wanted to ask if somebody with access to databases of European film coverage that I don't have could take a gander to see whether there's any archival sourcing that could be added to it to bolster passage of WP:GNG. Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 15:17, 14 May 2025 (UTC)

:The initial revision of the page was written by WP:LLM, as can be seen from the Markdown-style headings and the fact that none of the linked sources actually exist. User:Matthewhayana has also AI-generated other pages (see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Adam Waheed). He appears to be spam-creating articles to build credibility so he can promote his own film, The Red Mechanic (Film). Iiii I I I (talk) 00:11, 15 May 2025 (UTC)

Request for Review: Gian-Piero Ringel (Film Producer)

Hello everyone,

I have updated the article on the German film producer Gian-Piero Ringel:

Gian-Piero Ringel

The article is based on verifiable sources and follows the style of comparable biographies in the "Film Producer" category. I would appreciate a review, feedback, or any suggestions for improvement. Many thanks!

Plot changes

When I made a rewrite proposal at the ongoing discussion for Talk:Sinners (2025 film)#Edit War Dispute, an editor (Buh6173) said I {{tquote|really need to actually point out the changes [in the plot summary] and argue in favor of them}}. Do you guys think this is considered acceptable? Thanks, Lord Sjones23 (talk - contributions) 21:02, 16 May 2025 (UTC)

:Yes, without question. You should argue the merits of your preferences for specific content decisions if you want to convince others to support the consensus you want. In the case of word choice in a plot summary, it seems perfectly reasonable to break it down in the way that Buh6173 has done. They seem to have made fair arguments for their preferences so I would recommend engaging them in discussion and telling them on which points you agree and/or disagree. silviaASH (inquire within) 21:22, 16 May 2025 (UTC)

::I just wanted to make sure, that's all. I thought such word choices were compared via edit differences. Like I said, I'm still discussing these changes with the user(s) on the talk page, as myself and other editors have been doing for the past few days or so. Verifiability of the cast

How do we verify the cast of a film (since IMDb, and other IMDb / Wikipedia mirrors are unreliable)? If someone adds a non-main actor and character to the cast, and I haven't seen the film / do not have access to the film, and there are no review sites or other sources talking about it, do I assume good faith, if the same is available on IMDb? If I add a {{tl|citation needed}} against the actor's entry, how does someone fix it? Is it enough for a {{tqq|Trust me, he is there, I have watched the movie, and seen the rolling credits.}} Jay 💬 08:49, 24 May 2025 (UTC)

:If no independent reliable sources exist confirming the cast, then I would think the film itself is a perfectly fine reference, provided that there is no reason to believe that the film's credits are mistaken (e.g., a reliable source reporting on an actor disputing their credit on the film, or something). I would personally solve such an issue by using the {{TL|Cite AV media}} template and providing an exact timestamp with the time parameter. silviaASH (inquire within) 09:01, 24 May 2025 (UTC)

:Since the film itself is an acceptable source for credits (with the obvious exception of uncredited roles), I'd probably just ask at the Talk page if I had concerns, and take it on good-faith if editors other than the editor who'd made the addition confirmed that the actor(s) of concern are indeed credited. DonIago (talk) 16:09, 24 May 2025 (UTC)

:IMDb generally transcribes the credits accurately for released films. IMDb can't be used as a source, the actual listed credits in film itself is the reliable primary source for who is credited, but IMDb usually is correct and complete for credits. The problems is that IMDb is user edited and I personally have found bogus credits listed on some projects, which I did report to IMDb and they fixed. Geraldo Perez (talk) 16:27, 24 May 2025 (UTC)

::Thanks for all the responses. Asking at the talk page looks to be a viable solution. The concern is with IP editors or one-time editors adding their fav (lesser known) actor, or as paid editing, to multiple works, either as redlinks or just mentions, to increase visibility. Some could be genuine, some could be based on memory, and film article watchers are not usually concerned about a single entry being added to the cast of their watched article. Jay 💬 12:22, 25 May 2025 (UTC)

:::In cases like this where there are many minor character who may or may not have wikipedia articles, I usually balance this out with the following questions: Are these characters essential to understanding the plot and have we named the characters in the plot? Are they mentioned in the casting in the production? Do we have third-party sources discussing this persons roll even if its minor? If not, we are probably getting into unnecessary detail territory. Help with disruptive editing on Marty Supreme

Is this the right place to seek editors to weigh in on a consensus on the Marty Supreme page? 3 editors agreed on a consensus to remove very irrelevant information on the page but one editor has refused this decision and keeps reverting to add this information, which has led to nonstop edit warring.

Are there any editors available that can join in on the consensus with their opinions so we can end the dispute once and for all. It’s been going on for weeks now. Soe743edits (talk) 06:34, 27 May 2025 (UTC)

Movies not yet released worldwide

Recently, I've seen a few IPs completely or mostly remove content from the #Plot section in articles of movies not completely worldwide yet. Apparently, the main reason is because "users are spoiling the movie this way". I'm not sure if this is a justifiable reason or if it's part of a policy I'm not aware of. Help? Hacked (Talk|Contribs) 09:01, 29 May 2025 (UTC)

:@Ivebeenhacked It's understandable that the IP users wants to avoid spoilers, but it's not really an justifiable reason as per WP:SPOILER (guideline): {{tq|It is not acceptable to add "spoiler warning" notices or to delete information from (or hide it within) an article because you think it spoils the plot.}} Jolly1253 (talk) 09:39, 29 May 2025 (UTC)

Multiple reference discussion

Lately, there were some concerns raised on the Spider-Man: No Way Home talk page about using footnotes for multiple references to prevent any potential citation overkill. Back to the Future, an FA, uses this method.

Since this will likely affect any and all film-related articles, I'm going to start a discussion here. See also this discussion at Wikipedia:Help desk#Multiple references. Lord Sjones23 (talk - contributions) 07:23, 3 June 2025 (UTC)

:I disagree that this discussion will impact "any and all film-related articles". It is a matter of personal preference for the editors working on the article, and local consensus can be determined. Just because you saw one option in a featured article does not mean that is the only correct way to approach the issue. - adamstom97 (talk) 08:06, 3 June 2025 (UTC)

Question for the Brits

Just came across 2012 BFI London Film Festival Awards, which is just about the end-of-festival awards that were presented in 2012 and not about the whole festival. Obviously that's not how we write about film festivals ordinarily — while some film festivals {Cannes, Berlin, Toronto, Sundance, etc.) do have separate articles about each year's event, they're supposed to be complete articles about the entire event, including as complete as possible a listing of all the films that screened at the festival, with that year's award winners certainly coverable in a subsection of that larger article but not isolated as their own independent article topic all by themselves.

BFI London does have such articles in place for 2022, 2023 and 2024, but not yet for earlier years, while this appears to be the only one that treats the award announcements as a standalone topic in their own right while pretending that nothing else about the rest of the festival was notable at all.

Obviously, this should be converted into a more thorough and complete article about the 2012 BFI festival as a whole, if possible — but if it can't, then it's unclear that it would actually be needed in its existing form. So do any British editors here have access to resources (media coverage, the 2012 film schedule listings, etc.) that could get it looking more like individual-year film festival articles are supposed to look? Sight and Sound poll, but for Wikipedians

I was thinking about listings and rankings of media recently and it made me think about doing a Sight and Sound poll of the the Greatest Films of All Time, but with Wikipedia editors.

The only requirement would be having at least 1 GA or FA of a film, television show, actor, studio, or something else falling under the film project's purview.

It would be an interesting look into the people who make film articles on Wikipedia and show us what biases we have depending on the directors or countries of origin for the film's we pick.

Would anybody be interested in participating? I could simply make a user page and everybody else would only be required to write down up to ten films. Jon698 (talk) 06:32, 5 June 2025 (UTC)
