These one-time accounts are being used to add links to algorithm-code.com, a wiki repository of source code with little apparent quality control or respect for copyrights. In Herry12's contribs I found two pages linking to code stolen from a Java book by Preiss, in one case with the copyright notice still intact, in the other with it and any other identifying information stripped off. This site adds little value and the hit-and-run pattern of edits is a sign of bad faith. So far I'm not sure it's widespread enough for a blacklist, and blocking these users seems pointless, but I thought I'd mention it here as a heads-up. —David Eppstein (talk) 02:58, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi- I run the Scene Missing Magazine website, and I'd be happy to contribute to the discussion here. It was me that put up the interview links- I considered these links to be a valid addition to each wikipedia page. I apologize if these were misinterpreted as spam, but I have to admit I was a little annoyed to find that all of these links had been removed, seemingly without verification of their legitimacy. I've just removed a ton of duplicates from Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Spam/2007 Archive Oct 2 - there was a bug in the archival bot at that time. This site seems a pretty clearcut spammer to me. They added to virtually every article covering villages in Essex with the keyword "White's Directory" which has a big commercial market for family history research. Many of the articles linked to are of dubious value such as www.historyhouse.co.uk/essexb38.html and www.historyhouse.co.uk/essexh23.html which are completely worthless (well, they're about 95% adverts so I guess they're worth something to someone). The average article is like www.historyhouse.co.uk/essexs18a.html which tells you 176 people lived in the town in 1848 and that back then the rectory was worth £13. There are occasional photos which, if of value, could be linked to directly as they come from third-party sites. The only useful aspect of any of the articles linked to are the locations of the villages which should be in the main article anyway.

The links were bulk added in alphabetical order with no edit summaries. Having cleared some of the bulk submissions in the past I noticed a single link re-appear yesterday from a similar IP user which makes me suspect they're planning to reinstate as many as possible. Blacklist candidates? Certainly they seem candidates for a complete purge from all articles.

Keeps adding radio show links to bird articles. They are university links, not commercial, but they are being added with scant regard for taxonomy; shows about entire families are being added to species articles and in some cases completely the wrong typoe of bird (user apparently unaware that American and Eurasian blackbirds are different beasts. Anyway, they are being added faster than I can remove them (I've given two warnings) and I really need to actually start woirking at some point this morning. I would like a second opinion about a marginal case with a good faith editor. User:Pleasantville seems to be recently adding lots of internal and external links throwing traffic onto the wikipedia pages about Wolfram and also Wolfram's external site. According to the website linked from the user page she seems to be a freelance consultant doing stuff for them (at least as recently as last month I think). I think we probably should politely ask her to stop (fine) but also someone should review the links.
