Pre-12th Amendment infoboxes

I posted this on the 1800 United States presidential election talk page as well but I think it would be useful to assess some way that we could more clearly communicate that the elections worked differently before the 12th Amendment in the infoboxes. Currently, infoboxes are displayed the same way as post-12th Amendment elections which I think can be confusing to someone not familiar with the two different systems, especially on the 1800 page with Jefferson and Burr becoming opponents. it certainly confused me when I was younger.

I'm not sure exactly how we would go about this but I think it would be useful to open discussion on it. Stimpus1 (talk) 17:26, 12 March 2025 (UTC)

:One way would be to simply list all the candidates who received electoral votes, whether or not they were the party's "official" candidate for president. Seems like it would be fairly straightforward to do so. --Jfruh (talk) 17:34, 12 March 2025 (UTC)

::There was some attempt to do this recently but it was quickly changed back. The issue there is that it doesn't express which candidate was meant to be president or vice president, as the Jefferson-Burr tie was purely an accident. Maybe we could do this, but in place of the "Running mate" part, put "Type" or something like that and then either presidential or vice presidential. Stimpus1 (talk) 17:57, 12 March 2025 (UTC)

:::That would work but we'd want to indicate somehow that these were the party intentions but that doesn't carry legal or constitutional weight. There were only two contested elections conducted under the system and they both went wrong--the 1796 election also produced a result that was not intended by the parties contested it, with Jefferson ending up as VP despite being a presidential candidate. We'd get into all that in the article but the infobox should probaby present the factual results with as little fanfare as possible imo. --Jfruh (talk) 18:10, 12 March 2025 (UTC)

::::I'd agree but ultimately there is a heavy insistence by the editors on these articles that the infobox show running mates in some sense, so I don't think we'd be able to remove that part. Stimpus1 (talk) 18:35, 12 March 2025 (UTC)
