In the Cascade Range between Oakridge and La Pine and accessed by Highway 58, it operates on federal land under special use permit on the Willamette and Deschutes National Forests. Founded in 1941, the ski area has been locally-owned and operated by the Wiper family of Eugene since 1982, the year its first chairlift was installed.{{cite news|url=http://www.skinet.com/ski/resorts/2002/10/willamette-pass-oregon |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160417082025/http://www.skinet.com/ski/resorts/2002/10/willamette-pass-oregon|publisher=SKI Magazine|title=Willamette Pass |last=Solomon |first=Chris |date=October 16, 2002 |accessdate=2021-10-24 |url-status=usurped |archive-date=2016-04-17}}{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1310&dat=19820530&id=QPpVAAAAIBAJ&sjid=UOIDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6180,7453922|newspaper=Eugene Register-Guard|title=Ski area to install chairlift|last=Lynch |first=Bill |date=May 30, 1982 |page=1B }}{{cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=LwlWAAAAIBAJ&sjid=KOEDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6368%2C1856201 |newspaper=Eugene Register-Guard |last=Mortenson |first=Eric |title=Crash kills Eugene woman |date=November 8, 1986 |page=1}}
