He was born in Eastbourne, Sussex England,1901 Census – 22 Broadway, Bexleyheath, KentEngland & Wales Birth Indexes, Jul-Sep Quarter 1886, William Robert Hammond, Eastbourne Registration District, Volume 2b Page 81 and was part of the team which won the silver medal in the Team road race. Hammond was the son of David Hammond, a painter, and Emily, a laundress. At 15, he was a compass maker in Bexleyheath, Kent.
