History

The New York and Harlem Railroad opened in 1842. It became part of the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad in 1864, and later the New York Central Railroad (NYC). The Williams Bridge station building was located at the southeast corner of the Gun Hill Road bridge. The Third Avenue Elevated passed over the station from 1920 to 1973.
The NYC merged into Penn Central in 1968, which in turn merged into Conrail in 1976. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) took over the service in 1983 as the Metro-North Railroad Harlem Line. A parking lot was located on the south side of the Gun Hill Road bridge on the east side of the tracks until the 1990s. The southbound on-ramp to the Bronx River Parkway had two way traffic between Gun Hill Road and the parking lot; it was called Newell Street between those two points.
In January 2020, the MTA announced plans for renovations of Williams Bridge, Woodlawn, and Botanical Garden stations, including elevators and new stairs at Williams Bridge.{{cite news |url=https://www.progressiverailroading.com/passenger_rail/news/Metro-North-Railroad-to-make-three-stations-accessible--59444 |title=Metro-North Railroad to make three stations accessible |newspaper=Progressive Railroading |date=January 9, 2020 |access-date=January 15, 2024}} The northbound platform was temporarily closed on January 8, 2021, due to deterioration of the stairway.{{cite news |url=https://www.lohud.com/story/news/2021/04/02/stairway-shutdown-bronx-angers-metro-north-conductors/6985298002/ |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20240116044413/https://www.lohud.com/story/news/2021/04/02/stairway-shutdown-bronx-angers-metro-north-conductors/6985298002/ |archive-date=January 16, 2024 |title=Longtime stairway shutdown on Metro-North line raises charges of ignoring hospital workers |newspaper=Rockland/Westchester Journal News |first=Thomas C. |last=Zambito |date=April 2, 2021}}{{cite web |url=http://web.mta.info/mnr/pdf/01-08-21_WilliamsBridgeStairs_v2.pdf |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210215234401/http://web.mta.info/mnr/pdf/01-08-21_WilliamsBridgeStairs_v2.pdf |archive-date=February 15, 2021 |title=Williams Bridge Station Track 3 Stairway Closed for Repairs |date=January 8, 2021 |publisher=Metro-North Railroad}} Temporary stairs were built for both platforms that year and were replaced during a closure of the station from June 20 to July 12, 2023.{{cite press release |url=https://new.mta.info/press-release/mta-advises-customers-of-upcoming-station-repair-work-williams-bridge-metro-north |title=MTA Advises Customers of Upcoming Station Repair Work at Williams Bridge Metro-North Station |date=June 6, 2023 |publisher=Metro-North Railroad}} The MTA opened bidding on a design-build contract for the three stations in December 2023.{{cite web |url=https://new.mta.info/document/129376 |title=Contract Solicitation Notice/Project Overview |date=December 20, 2023 |publisher=Metro-North Railroad}}
