Wind power in West Virginia
{{short description|Electricity from wind in one U.S. state}}
The U.S. Department of Energy has determined that West Virginia has significant wind power development opportunities,{{cite web|url=http://www.wvcommerce.org/energy/renewable_energy/wind.aspx|title=West Virginia Department of Commerce Wind Energy|author=WV Department of Commerce|date=11 May 2015|work=wvcommerce.org|access-date=11 May 2015}} with a potential of 69 gigawatts. As of the start of 2020, there were 376 wind turbines in operation in West Virginia with a generating capacity of 686 megawatts (MW) and responsible for 2.7% of in-state electricity production. An additional 56 MW was under construction.{{cite web|title=West Virginia Wind Energy|url=https://www.awea.org/Awea/media/Resources/StateFactSheets/West-Virginia.pdf|website=U.S. Wind Energy State Facts|publisher=American Wind Energy Association|access-date=30 April 2020}}
The state, a major coal producer, passed renewable portfolio standard legislation in 2009, but repealed it in 2015.{{cite web | title = State Renewable Portfolio Standards and Goals | publisher = National Association of State Legislatures | date = February 19, 2015 | url = http://www.ncsl.org/research/energy/renewable-portfolio-standards.aspx | access-date = 2 June 2015}}
