History
Ernie Pitt was unable to get his student investigation published in a local newspaper, so he decided to start his own paper. Pitt & Joseph N. C. Egemonye founded the Chronicle in 1974. Its office was on North Liberty Street. Pitt made a vow to include news of the African-American community that other news media did not consider worth covering. He told the truth, whether it was good news or not. He also hired Black journalists when other papers did not.{{cite news|url=https://greensboro.com/opinion/column/robin-adams-cheeley-best-and-worst-of-times-the-wnston-salem-chronicle-turns-50/article_ff167578-64c4-11ef-8dfa-1313c5a9e8e5.html|title=Best and worst of times: The Wnston-Salem [sic] Chronicle turns 50 |last=Cheeley|first=Robin Adams|work=Greensboro News and Record|date=September 1, 2024}} The Chronicle won numerous awards including the John Russwurm Award as best Black newspaper in the United States.{{cite news|url=https://greensboro.com/opinion/editorial/allen-johnson-being-editor-of-the-winston-salem-chronicle-was-the-hardest-job-i-ever/article_81c58b2c-66f9-11ef-ab57-af2267ebb162.html|title=Being editor of the Winston-Salem Chronicle was the hardest job I ever loved |last=Johnson|first=Allen|work=Greensboro News and Record|date=September 1, 2024}}
