The Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery is a public-private research and outreach partnership that is located in the Discovery Building on the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus. It consists of two institutions: the privately funded Morgridge Institute for Research, and the publicly funded Wisconsin Institute for Discovery. Both institutes opened in 2010.{{cite news|url=http://www.bizjournals.com/milwaukee/stories/2008/06/23/daily1.html|title=Wiley takes interim post at Wisconsin Institute for Discovery|work=The Business Journal of Milwaukee|publisher=American City Business Journals, Inc.|date=23 June 2008|access-date=11 December 2009}} The publicly funded institute is headed by Jo Handelsman,{{Cite web|url=http://news.wisc.edu/jo-handelsman-named-director-of-wisconsin-institute-for-discovery/|title=Jo Handelsman Named Director of Wisconsin Institute for Discovery|date=2013|access-date=27 August 2013}} and the privately funded institute is led by chief executive officer Brad Schwartz.{{cite web|title=Leadership|url=http://www.discovery.wisc.edu/home/morgridge/about-morgridge/leadership/leadership.cmsx|access-date=27 August 2013|year=2013|publisher=Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery}}
Both institutes are housed in the same facility, the ground floor of which serves as a "town center", providing several small and large meeting and collaboration areas and variety of dining options. This town center design is based on the philosophies presented in the Wisconsin Idea.{{cite web|url=http://discovery.wisc.edu/media.acux/b3f2698e-60e4-4482-90ce-d01ddf8affa0|title=Building - Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery|date=28 April 2009|publisher=Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery|access-date=11 December 2009}} Above the town center on the ground floor, the building has three floors of modular, non-traditional research and lab space, designed to promote collaboration amongst researchers. The building is also designed using green techniques, and is expected to use 50% less energy and water than the next most recent research building on the UW–Madison campus.
