History

In November 1999, the WSPF opened as the Supermax Correctional Institution on a {{convert|24|acre|adj=on}} site.

In October 2003, the prison was renamed to the Wisconsin Secure Program Facility.{{Cite web |date=2017 |title=Wisconsin Secure Program Facility annual report (FY 2017) |url=https://www.wistatedocuments.org/digital/collection/p267601coll4/id/17100/ |website=Wisconsin Digital Archives}}

In 2009, the Associated Press filed a lawsuit against the Wisconsin Department of Corrections (WIDOC), trying to force the agency to release a video of an explosion of a stinger grenade launched into a prisoner's cell.{{cite web |url=http://www.huffingtonpost.com/huff-wires/20091026/us-inmate-grenade/ |title=AP Files Lawsuit Over Video Of Grenade Detonation At Wisconsin Prison |work=The Huffington Post |date=October 26, 2009 |access-date=October 10, 2010 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20091029105533/http://www.huffingtonpost.com/huff-wires/20091026/us-inmate-grenade/ |archive-date=October 29, 2009 |first=Scott |last=Bauer }} The video was eventually released, the AP was awarded legal fees, and the inmate settled an excessive force lawsuit with WIDOC for US$49,000 ({{Inflation|US|49000|2009|fmt=eq}}).{{cite news |title=Wisconsin Prison Releases Video of Grenade Attack |url=https://www.foxnews.com/story/wisconsin-prison-releases-video-of-grenade-attack/ |access-date=August 26, 2016 |agency=Associated Press |publisher=Fox News |date=November 16, 2009 }}
