Paper is provided for the visitor to tie a wish to the tree.

The work builds on the Japanese tradition of tying prayers to trees.

Returning the paper back to its source evokes an offering.{{cite web|url=http://artificeau.blogspot.com/2007/04/yoko-ono-wish-tree-for-washington.html|title=ARTifice: Fear and Loathing in DC|work=artificeau.blogspot.com|date=23 April 2007 |access-date=6 July 2015}}
