History

The first women's football team in Iceland was Fótboltafélagið Hvöt that was founded in 1914 in Ísafjörður after the girls had been denied to practice with Fótboltafélag Ísafjarðar, an all-boys team.{{cite news |title=Upphaf kvennaknattspyrnu? |url=https://timarit.is/page/1568089 |access-date=21 December 2023 |work=Morgunblaðið |date=11 January 1983 |page=44 |language=Icelandic |via=Tímarit.is}}{{open access}}{{cite news |author1=Steinþór Guðbjartsson |title=Konurnar fyrstar á Ísafirði |url=https://www.mbl.is/frettir/innlent/2017/06/01/konurnar_fyrstar_a_isafirdi/ |accessdate=21 December 2023 |work=Morgunblaðið |date=1 June 2017}} A year later, future actress Anna Borg founded a short lived football team in Reykjavík.{{cite news |author1=Skapti Hallgrímsson |title=Stúlkur á Ísafirði brutu ísinn 1914 |url=https://timarit.is/page/6902835?iabr=on#page/n3/mode/1up |access-date=21 December 2023 |work=Morgunblaðið |date=9 July 2017 |page=4 |language=Icelandic |via=Tímarit.is}}{{open access}}

It took several decades for a women's national league to form, first with an indoors league in 1971. A year later the transition to the modern day outdoor league came with 8 teams participating in the inaugural season. Few of Iceland's traditional footballing heavyweights participated at first, but came in with the main expansion in 1982.{{citation needed|date=December 2023}}
