Background

Wong Nai Chung Reservoir was the third reservoir in Hong Kong, built in 1889 in Tai Tam Reservoir Road, Wong Nai Chung. Before closure, it had only water storage capacity of just {{convert|27|e6impgal|m3}}, only 38% of the size of its Pok Fu Lam counterpart. Because of its small water storage capacity, the British Hong Kong Government decided to cease operations at the reservoir. The reservoir was then converted to Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park and opened to the public in 1986. It provided water sports facilities like sampans and boats till 14 February 2017.

Some of the components of the reservoir, including the weir, the dam and the valve house, were classified as Grade III historic buildings.{{Cite web |url=http://www.wsd.gov.hk/en/education/history/the_legacy_of_waterworks/wong_nai_chung_reservoir/index.html |title=Wong Nai Chung Reservoir |access-date=9 August 2009 |archive-date=21 November 2014 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141121062633/http://www.wsd.gov.hk/en/education/history/the_legacy_of_waterworks/wong_nai_chung_reservoir/index.html |url-status=dead }}{{Cite web |url=http://news.gov.hk/en/hkforkids/default/070510/html/070510en50002.htm |title=Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park |access-date=9 August 2009 |archive-date=8 September 2009 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090908144452/http://news.gov.hk/en/hkforkids/default/070510/html/070510en50002.htm |url-status=dead }}{{Cite web |url=http://www.amo.gov.hk/form/historical.pdf |title=List of Graded Historic Buildings in Hong Kong (as at 7 Nov 2008) |access-date=9 August 2009 |archive-date=9 July 2011 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110709224215/http://www.amo.gov.hk/form/historical.pdf |url-status=dead }}
