WorldBox is a 2012 sandbox game by Maxim Karpenko. The game allows the use of different elements to create, change, and destroy virtual worlds as well as civilizations.

Gameplay

The game's main feature is the ability to create worlds, using godlike tools known as "God powers" provided in the game. These are divided into several groups: World Creation, Civilizations, Creatures, Nature and Disasters, Destruction Powers, and Other Powers.{{Cite news |last=Bell |first=Alice |date=2022-01-10 |title=In WorldBox, I am a terrible scientist studying the collapse of fantastical nations |language=en |work=Rock, Paper, Shotgun |url=https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/in-worldbox-i-am-a-terrible-scientist-studying-the-collapse-of-fantastical-nations |access-date=2022-07-09 |archive-date=2022-07-04 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220704064744/https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/in-worldbox-i-am-a-terrible-scientist-studying-the-collapse-of-fantastical-nations |url-status=live }} Conversely, the game also allows the destruction of worlds, ranging from explosives to natural disasters, such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and acid rain. Populations can also be reduced with hostile entities, illnesses, etc.{{Cite news|first1=Joseph|last1=Knoop|date=2021-08-25|title=This new god game has an actual Thanos snap button|language=en|work=PC Gamer|url=https://www.pcgamer.com/super-worldbox-impressions/|access-date=2021-12-14|archive-date=2021-12-14|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20211214033117/https://www.pcgamer.com/super-worldbox-impressions/|url-status=live}} Worlds can also, as of version 0.21, go through "ages", which can affect biomes and creatures, both negatively and positively.{{Cite web |date=12 March 2023 |title=0.21.0 - MegaBox - Major Update! |url=https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1206560/view/3682294225186994228 |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230312174341/https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1206560/view/3682294225186994228 |archive-date=2023-03-12 |access-date=2023-03-12 |website=Steam |language=en}}

Some creatures are able to create civilizations (humans, orcs, elves and dwarves). Such civilizations can grow, declare war on each other, make alliances, and suffer rebellions.{{Cite news |date=2022-01-15 |title=Be god of your own Middle-earth in WorldBox - God Simulator |language=en-gb |work=Eurogamer.net |url=https://www.eurogamer.net/be-god-of-your-own-middle-earth-in-worldbox-god-simulator |access-date=2022-07-09 |archive-date=2022-07-07 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220707043105/https://www.eurogamer.net/be-god-of-your-own-middle-earth-in-worldbox-god-simulator |url-status=live }}

Beginning with version 0.14, players are also able to customise the banners and symbols of kingdoms, along with the ability to control the traits of creatures, adding more content and depth to the gameplay.{{Cite web |title=WorldBox - God Simulator on Steam |url=https://store.steampowered.com/app/1206560/WorldBox__God_Simulator/ |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220513064849/https://store.steampowered.com/app/1206560/WorldBox__God_Simulator/ |archive-date=2022-05-13 |access-date=2022-11-27 |website=store.steampowered.com |language=en}}{{Cite web |title=WorldBox - Changelog (0.14.3 - 0.14.5) |url=https://www.superworldbox.com/changelog |access-date=2022-11-27 |website=www.superworldbox.com |language=en |archive-date=2022-11-27 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221127185144/https://www.superworldbox.com/changelog |url-status=live }} Beginning with version 0.21, kingdoms can form alliances, and kings and leaders can form clans.

Development

Russian game developer Maxim Karpenko started working on the game back in 2011, and published the first prototype on Flash in the same year. In 2012, he released it on Newgrounds. He continued working on the game for several years, and released it on IOS in December 2018,{{Cite web |last=Karpenko |first=Maxim |date=September 1, 2018 |title=Game history (What's the latest version of Worldbox?) |url=https://www.superworldbox.com/changelog |url-status=live |access-date=April 10, 2025 |website=superworldbox.com}} with the Android version coming in early February 2019. He proceeded to work on the game and released it for Windows in October 2019.

Reception

Graham Smith of Rock Paper Shotgun wrote: "I'd probably had my fill of WorldBox after around 4 hours, but it was a happy four hours."{{Cite news |last=Smith |first=Graham |date=2022-01-08 |title=WorldBox is a god sim too smart to give you goals |language=en |work=Rock, Paper, Shotgun |url=https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/worldbox-is-a-god-sim-too-smart-to-give-you-goals |access-date=2022-11-27 |archive-date=2022-05-07 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220507125827/https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/worldbox-is-a-god-sim-too-smart-to-give-you-goals |url-status=live }} Joseph Knoop of PC Gamer wrote: "It's funny how much WorldBox shares with big strategy games, despite not presenting an ultimate goal to the player, and almost always ending with a boredom-killing nuclear bomb. Watching the borders of a kingdom stretch, retract, and suddenly disappear tickles a part of my brain that really likes to be tickled. Considering WorldBox is about to become an Early Access game on Steam, I'm eager to see what other maniacal tools get added to the toybox."
