History
In 1979, NAVS established World Day for Laboratory Animals (also referred to as Lab Animal Day) on April 24 – Lord Hugh Dowding's birthday. This international day of commemoration is recognised by the United Nations, and is now marked annually by anti-vivisectionists on every continent. In 1980, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), led by PETA Founder, Ingrid Newkirk, organized the first World Day for Laboratory Animals protest in the U.S.{{Cite web|url=https://www.peta.org/about-peta/milestones/|title=PETA's Milestones {{!}} PETA|website=PETA|language=en-US|access-date=2018-12-04}}
Today the event is marked by demonstrations and protests by groups opposed to the use of animals in research.{{cite web|title=World Laboratory Animal Liberation Week|url=http://www.all-creatures.org/wlalw/|accessdate=11 April 2013}} In April 2010 protesters marched through central London calling for an end to the use of animals in research,.{{cite web|title=World Day For Animals In Laboratories|url=http://www.demotix.com/news/314089/world-day-animals-laboratories#media-314063/|accessdate=11 April 2013}}{{cite news |title=Animal Life |url=https://animalliferesearch.com/ |access-date=16 October 2023}}{{cite news |title=knine culture |url=https://www.knineculture.com}} A similar march took place in Birmingham in 2012.{{cite web|title=World Day for Animals in Laboratories rally, Birmingham|url=http://allevents.in/Birmingham/World-Day-for-Animals-in-Laboratories-Press-Release/292643717480156#/|accessdate=11 April 2013}} and Nottingham in 2014.{{Cite web|url=http://www.veggies.org.uk/eventprint.php?ref=324|title=2014 Nottingham Rally Report}}
World Day and World Week For Animals In Laboratories have also attracted attention from scientific groups defending the use of animals in research. On 22 April 2009 members of UCLA Pro-Test held a rally in support of biomedical research on animals,{{cite web|title=Stand up for Research at UCLA – April 22nd !!|date=30 March 2009|url=http://speakingofresearch.com/2009/03/30/stand-up-for-research-at-ucla-april-22nd/|accessdate=18 April 2013}} and to condemn the violence and harassment directed at faculty member Prof. David Jentsch by animal activists.{{cite web|title=West Side Story: Scientists vs. Activists|date=22 April 2009 |url=http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/West-Side-Story-Scientists-Activists-Face-Off-at-UCLA.html|accessdate=11 April 2013}}{{cite web|title=Scientists, supporters rally at UCLA for animal research|website=Los Angeles Times |date=23 April 2009 |url=https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2009-apr-23-me-animals23-story.html|access-date=12 April 2013}}
