{{Use dmy dates|date=January 2017}}

The World Health Organization Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) is a structured interview for psychiatric disorders. As the interview is designed for epidemiological studies, it can be administered by those who are not clinically trained and can be completed in a short amount of time. Versions of the CIDI were used in two important studies, the National Comorbidity Survey (NCS){{cite journal |last1=Blazer |first1=DG |last2=Kessler |first2=RC |last3=McGonagle |first3=KA |last4=Swartz |first4=MS |name-list-style=vanc |date=July 1994 |title=The prevalence and distribution of major depression in a national community sample: The National Comorbidity Survey |journal=American Journal of Psychiatry |volume=151 |issue=7 |pages=979–86 |pmid=8010383 |doi=10.1176/ajp.151.7.979 }}

and National Comorbidity Survey Replication (NCS-R){{cite journal |last1=Kessler |first1=Ronald C. |last2=Chiu |first2=Wai Tat |last3=Demler |first3=Olga |last4=Merikangas |first4=Kathleen R. |last5=Walters |first5=Ellen E. |name-list-style=vanc |date=June 2005 |title=Prevalence, Severity, and Comorbidity of 12-Month DSM-IV Disorders in the National Comorbidity Survey Replication |journal=Archives of General Psychiatry |volume=62 |issue=6 |pages=617–27 |doi=10.1001/archpsyc.62.6.617 |doi-access=free |pmid=15939839 |pmc=2847357 }}

which are often used as a reference for estimates of the rates of psychiatric illness in the USA.

The first version of the CIDI was published in 1988,{{cite journal |first1=Lee N. |last1=Robins |first2=John |last2=Wing |first3=Hans Ulrich |last3=Wittchen |first4=John E. |last4=Helzer |first5=Thomas F. |last5=Babor |first6=Jay |last6=Burke |first7=Anne |last7=Farmer |first8=Assen |last8=Jablenski |first9=Roy |last9=Pickens |first10=Darrel A. |last10=Regier |first11=Norman |last11=Sartorius |first12=Leland H. |last12=Towle |name-list-style=vanc |url=http://archpsyc.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/45/12/1069 |url-access=subscription |title=The Composite International Diagnostic Interview: An Epidemiologic Instrument Suitable for Use in Conjunction With Different Diagnostic Systems and in Different Cultures |journal=Archives of General Psychiatry |volume=45 |issue=12 |pages=1069–1077 |date=December 1988 |pmid=2848472 |doi=10.1001/archpsyc.1988.01800360017003 }} and has been periodically updated to reflect the changing diagnostic criteria of DSM and ICD.
