X-ray fluorescence holography

X-ray fluorescence holography (XFH) is a holography method with atomic resolution based on atomic fluorescence.{{cite journal|last1=Hayashi|first1=Kouichi|last2=Happo|first2=Naohisa|last3=Hosokawa|first3=Shinya|last4=Hu|first4=Wen|last5=Matsushita|first5=Tomohiro|title=X-ray fluorescence holography|journal=Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter|volume=24|issue=9|date=2012|pages=093201|issn=0953-8984|doi=10.1088/0953-8984/24/9/093201|pmid=22318258|bibcode=2012JPCM...24i3201H}} It is a relatively new technique that benefits greatly from the coherent high-power X-rays available from synchrotron sources, such as the Japanese SPring-8 facility.

Imaging

Fluorescent X-rays are scattered by atoms in a sample and provide the object wave, which is referenced to non-scattered X-rays. A holographic pattern is recorded by scanning a detector around the sample, which allows researchers to investigate the local 3D structure around a specific element in a sample.{{cite journal|title=3D atomic imaging of SiGe system by X-ray fluorescence holography|last1=Hayashi|first1=K.|journal=Journal of Materials Science: Materials in Electronics|volume=14|issue=5/7|date=2003|pages=459–462|issn=0957-4522|doi=10.1023/A:1023993911437|s2cid=134765278}}{{cite journal|last1=Chukhovskii|first1=F. Applications

It is useful for investigating the effects of irradiation on high temperature superconductors.{{citation needed|date=November 2014}}

Twin picture

One of the criticisms for this method is that it suffers from twin images. D. Gabor. Barton proposed that reconstructed phased images of holograms will suppress twin images effects.{{cite journal|last1=Xie|first1=Honglan|last2=Chen|first2=Jianwen|last3=Gao|first3=Hongyi|last4=Xiong|first4=Shisheng|last5=Xu|first5=Zhizhan|title=Removing twin images in X-ray fluorescence holography|journal=Optics Communications|volume=229|issue=1–6|date=2004|pages=123–129|issn=0030-4018|doi=10.1016/j.optcom.2003.10.033|bibcode=2004OptCo.229..123X}}
