The XAD system is an open-source client-based unarchiving system for the Amiga. This means there is a master library called xadmaster.library which provides an interface between the client and the user application and there are clients handling the special archive formats.{{cite magazine |last=Drummond|first=Richard|date=June 1999 |title=Cover disc, The Big Squeeze|magazine=Amiga Format |publisher=Future Publishing|issn=0957-4867|issue=124|page=85}} Three different types to handle file and disk archives and also disk image files (filesystem) are possible.{{cite magazine |last=Drummond|first=Richard|date=January 2000 |title=PD Select, XADMaster v3.1|magazine=Amiga Format |publisher=Future Publishing|issn=0957-4867|issue=132|page=40}}{{cite magazine |last=Němec|first=Luboš |date=May 1999|title=XFD & XAD Package|language=cs|magazine=Amiga Review|publisher=Atlantida Publishing|issn=1211-1465|issue=44|pages=27–29}} They can be made by anyone. The master library itself includes some of these clients internally to make the work somewhat easier for the package maintainer and the user installing it.
The XAD subsystem was officially included in AmigaOS 3.9 along with a simple ReAction GUI-based tool for unarchiving supported file archives.{{Cite web|url=http://www.haage-partner.de/amiga/aos39/aos39features-e.htm|title=HAAGE & PARTNER Computer: Features of AmigaOS 3.9|publisher=HAAGE & PARTNER |access-date=2016-08-01}} It is also part of MorphOS since version 2.0.{{Cite web|url=http://morphos-team.net/releasenotes/2.0|title=Release Notes - MorphOS 2.0|website=morphos-team.net|date=2008-06-30|access-date=2016-08-01}} The Mac OS X frontend is called The Unarchiver and written in Objective-C.{{cite web |url=http://unarchiver.c3.cx/commandline|title=Command line tools |website=unarchiver.c3.cx |access-date=2016-08-01}}
