The XRCO Awards are given by the American X-Rated Critics Organization annually to people working in adult entertainment and it is the only adult industry awards show reserved exclusively for industry members.{{cite magazine|url=http://business.avn.com/articles/video/XRCO-Descends-on-Hollywood-Tonight-472743.html|title=XRCO Descends on Hollywood Tonight|access-date=January 10, 2014|author=Peter Warren|date=April 12, 2012|magazine=AVN}}

Once every calendar year, XRCO members are asked to submit their own nominations. Members do not have to vote in every award category, and they are asked only to vote in areas that they feel qualified in.{{cite web|url=http://www.dirtybob.com/xrco/faq/faq.htm|title=XRCO FAQ|publisher=XRCO|access-date=January 14, 2014}} The award ceremony usually takes place during the spring and no later than the first week of April.{{cite magazine|url=http://business.avn.com/articles/video/Porn-Gears-up-for-XRCO-39999.html|title=Porn Gears up for XRCO|access-date=January 10, 2014|author=Stephen Ochs|date=August 19, 2004|magazine=AVN}} Some of the works and workers are inducted into the XRCO Hall of Fame during the awards.

The XRCO online archive is missing many results prior to 1993 and the site encourages visitors to send in older results. The awards have been called "an X-rated version of the Academy Awards" and "a combination high-school beer bash, Mardi gras and Frederick's of Hollywood lingerie show".{{cite news|url=https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1988-02-19-ca-29687-story.html|title=Academy Awards of XXX Convene in 'the Valley of Lust': Uptight Undercurrent Mars Atmosphere of Kinky Abandon in Era of Challenges From Law|newspaper=Los Angeles Times|date=February 19, 1988|access-date=January 12, 2014}} They have also been referred to as the "critics' circle awards for porn".{{cite book|author=James F. History

After the controversy and criticism of the best erotic scene victory for the movie Virginia in 1984 at the Adult Film Association of America (AFAA) awards, the X-Rated Critics Organization (XRCO) and its "Heart-On Awards", were founded.Robert Rimmer, The X-Rated Videotape Guide, Prometheus Books, 1993, {{ISBN|0-87975-799-X}}. Jim Holliday was a founder and previously the honorary historian of the X-Rated Critics Organization.{{cite magazine|author=Acme Andersson|title=Tears and Cheers at Holliday Memorial|magazine=AVN|date=January 21, 2005|url=http://www.avn.com/video/articles/19368.html|archive-url=https://archive.today/20120723015953/http://www.avn.com/video/articles/19368.html|url-status=dead|archive-date=July 23, 2012|access-date=June 18, 2008}}{{cite web|url=http://www.xrco.com/|title=XRCO - X-Rated Critics Organization|publisher=XRCO|access-date=November 8, 2007}}{{cite magazine|author=Tim Connelly|title=Jim Holliday Passes Away|magazine=AVN|date=December 16, 2004|url=http://www.avn.com/video/articles/18769.html|archive-url=https://archive.today/20130117123540/http://www.avn.com/video/articles/18769.html|url-status=dead|archive-date=January 17, 2013|access-date=June 18, 2008}} After Holliday's death, the position of XRCO Historian was temporarily filled by XRCO founding member Bill Margold until 2006.{{cite web|url=http://www.xrco.com|title=XRCO|publisher=XRCO|access-date=January 14, 2014}}

In March 2015, changes to the award program were announced. Citing the venue and date changes made in 2014, the event organizers announced that the awards show would be recorded and broadcast by the company Vrai Voyeur. Also announced was the debut of a new design for the award handed out to winners. The "iconic wooden heart on trophies" would be retired and be replaced with "something bigger and better than ever".{{cite magazine|title=XRCO Rolls Out Fresh Trophies, New Features for 2015|url=http://business.avn.com/articles/video/XRCO-Rolls-Out-Fresh-Trophies-New-Features-for-2015-592638.html|access-date=March 30, 2015|magazine=AVN|date=March 27, 2015}}
