The Xeon D is a brand of x86 system on a chip designed, manufactured, and marketed by Intel, targeted at the microserver market.{{cite news |title=Intel's Xeon brand makes its first foray into SoC space with Xeon D |url=https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/03/intels-xeon-brand-makes-its-first-foray-into-soc-space-with-xeon-d/ |website=Ars Technica |language=en-US |date=March 9, 2015 |access-date=May 16, 2018}} It was announced in 2014, with the first products released in 2015. Related to the Xeon brand of workstation and server processors are based on the same architecture as server-grade CPUs, with support for ECC memory, higher core counts, support for larger amounts of RAM, and a larger cache. Unique to the Xeon D line, emphasis was also made on low power consumption, and integrated hardware blocks such as a network interface controllers, a PCIe root complex, and USB and SATA controllers.
Design goals
The Xeon D was designed to offer better performance per watt compared to the Xeon E3 and better absolute performance compared to the Atom processors, while operating at lower power and higher densities than Xeon E5 processors.{{cite news |last1=De Gelas |first1=Johan |date=June 23, 2015 |title=The Intel Xeon D Review |url=https://www.anandtech.com/show/9185/intel-xeon-d-review-performance-per-watt-server-soc-champion/2 |website=AnandTech |language=en-US |access-date=May 16, 2018}} Particularly, the Xeon D was designed to compete with emerging ARM microarchitecture–based server solutions,{{cite news |last1=Prickett Morgan |first1=Timothy |date=March 9, 2015 |title=Intel Crafts Broadwell Xeon D For Hyperscale |url=https://www.nextplatform.com/2015/03/09/intel-crafts-broadwell-xeon-d-for-hyperscale/ |website=The Next Platform |language=en-US |access-date=May 16, 2018}} by offering superior single core performance.{{cite news |last1=De Gelas |first1=Johan |date=December 16, 2014 |title=ARM Challenging Intel in the Server Market |url=https://www.anandtech.com/show/8776/arm-challinging-intel-in-the-server-market-an-overview |website=AnandTech |language=en-US |access-date=May 16, 2018}}
