MarineLog, 31 July 2012. {{retrieved|accessdate=2018-08-17}} design contract for China's first domestically-built polar research vessel was signed in 2012 with the Finnish engineering company Aker Arctic, though construction did not begin until December 2016.{{cite web | url=http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2017-10/10/c_136669892.htm | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180420074516/http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2017-10/10/c_136669892.htm | url-status=dead | archive-date=April 20, 2018 | title=First Chinese-built polar icebreaker gets name | publisher=Xinhua | date=10 October 2017 | accessdate=19 April 2018}} She was built at Jiangnan Shipyard.

Xue Long 2 now in service both as a supply vessel for China's research facilities in the Arctic and Antarctic regions and as a research vessel, with capabilities for geological and biological experimentation and surveying.{{cite web | url=http://www.motorship.com/news101/ships-and-shipyards/china-builds-first-polar-research-ship | title=China builds first polar research ship | publisher=The Motorship | date=17 April 2018 | accessdate=19 April 2018}}

Design

Xue Long 2 measures {{convert|122.5|m|ft}} long, with a beam of {{convert|22.3|m|ft}} and a draft of {{convert|8.3|m|ft}} at full load. She has a displacement of 14,300 tonnes. She has a diesel-electric propulsion system, with two 8-cylinder and two 12-cylinder engines, both Wärtsilä 32-series designs,{{csr|register=SEAWEB|id=9829241|shipname=Xue Long 2|accessdate=4 December 2020}} powering two 7.5 MW Azipod propulsion units that give her a speed of up to {{convert|15|kn}} in open water and {{convert|3|kn}} when breaking {{convert|1.5|m|ft|adj=on}} ice.{{cite web|url=https://www.highnorthnews.com/en/china-launches-domestically-built-xue-long-2-icebreaker|title= China Launches Domestically-Built “Xue Long 2” Icebreaker|website=High North News|date=11 September 2018|accessdate=19 January 2025}} Her ice class is Polar Class 3 and she is able to break ice while traveling either ahead or astern.
