The Yamaha DX9 is a spin off synthesizer of the family of the DX7 built by Yamaha. It uses FM synthesis{{Cite web|url=https://www.sequencer.de/syns/yamaha/DX9.html|title=Yamaha DX9 Digital Synthesizer|last=Moogulator|first=Mic Irmer|website=www.sequencer.de|access-date=2018-08-10}} and has 16 note polyphony; however, it only has four FM operators for sound generation compared with six on the DX7 (without alternative firmware ROM).{{Citation |last=Anthony |title=ajxs/yamaha_dx97 |date=2024-09-24 |url=https://github.com/ajxs/yamaha_dx97 |access-date=2024-09-24}} It is the least complex of the DX range of synthesizers and has only 20 on board memory locations.{{Cite web|url=https://soundprogramming.net/synthesizers/yamaha/yamaha-dx9/|title=Yamaha DX9 {{!}} Sound Programming|website=soundprogramming.net|language=en|access-date=2018-08-10}}
