History

In 1939, the subdistrict was renamed from Ban Thawai (บ้านทะวาย) to Yan Nawa, following the same name change of Yan Nawa District.{{cite journal|journal=Royal Gazette|volume=56|issue=ก|pages=877–882|title=พระราชกฤษฎีกาเปลี่ยนนามอำเภอ กิ่งอำเภอและตำบลบางแห่ง พุทธศักราช ๒๔๘๒|url=http://www.ratchakitcha.soc.go.th/DATA/PDF/2482/A/877.PDF|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120125113948/http://www.ratchakitcha.soc.go.th/DATA/PDF/2482/A/877.PDF|url-status=dead|archive-date=January 25, 2012|date=1939-09-25|language=th}} In 1989, the subdistrict together with Thung Wat Don was split off from Yan Nawa District to form Sathon District.{{cite journal|journal=Royal Gazette|volume=106|issue=208 ง ฉบับพิเศษ|pages=12|title=ประกาศกระทรวงมหาดไทย เรื่อง เปลี่ยนแปลงพื้นที่เขตยานนาวา และตั้งเขตสาธรและเขตบางคอแหลม|url=http://www.ratchakitcha.soc.go.th/DATA/PDF/2532/D/208/12.PDF|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160304213156/http://www.ratchakitcha.soc.go.th/DATA/PDF/2532/D/208/12.PDF|url-status=dead|archive-date=March 4, 2016|date=1989-11-24|language=th}}

The reason why it used to be called "Ban Thawai" (Tavoyan hamlet) because in the past Yan Nawa used to be a residence in Bangkok by the Tavoyan people who were forcibly brought up from Tavoy (now Dawei) in the south during the reign of King Rama I in the early Rattanakosin period more than 250 years ago. It is assumed that the territory of Ban Tawai covers the area of Wat Rat Singkhon and the departure point of the Chao Phraya Express Boat at present Wat Phraya Krai, Bang Kho Laem.{{cite web|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dU-tbl0pqII|title=ไทยรบพม่า ตอนที่ 8 ศึกทวาย|trans-title=Thai–Burmese War episode 8: The Battle of Dawei|work=YouTube|language=thai|date=2017-06-07|accessdate=2022-05-13|first1=Sunait|last1=Chutintaranond|first2=Veera|last2=Theerapat}}
