The Yehuda HaLevi Synagogue ({{langx|es|Sinagoga Rabí Yehuda Halevi}}) is a Jewish congregation and synagogue, located in the Colonia Roma neighborhood of Mexico City, in Mexico.{{Cite journal |author=Ivan |date=2007 |title=La otra arquitectura religiosa de la Ciudad de México |lang=es |url=http://www.revistas.unam.mx/index.php/bitacora/article/viewFile/26230/24661 |journal=Bitácora |publisher=UNAM |issue=17 |pages=49–55 |access-date=6 February 2016}} Built between 1941 and 1942, the synagogue was named after Yehudah Halevi, Jewish philosopher, physician and poet from medieval Spain.
History
In 1924, the Sephardic Jewish community of Mexico City unified as an organization called «La Fraternidad» (The Brotherhood). The Sepharadim did not have a synagogue of their own, having to use other synagogues and Jewish community buildings. However, they still ran into space issues. The organization used a Protestant Church for a while before deciding in the 1940s to have their own building. In 1941, the organization bought a plot of land on Calle Monterrey, where the congregation remains to this day.
The design of the building was chosen in a contest. The winning submission was by engineer Francisco Cánovas and was inspired by the Sephardic synagogue in Vidin, Bulgaria.{{Cite web |title=Historia de "La Comunidad Sefaradí de México" |lang=es |url=http://www.anajnu.cl/sefaradiesmexico.htm |access-date=6 February 2016 |work=ANAJNU.cl |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200706164046/https://www.anajnu.cl/sefaradiesmexico.htm |archive-date=2020-07-06 |url-status=dead}} Construction finished in 1942 and the synagogue was consecrated in honor of Yehuda Halevi at the suggestion of La Fraternidad member Victor Babani.{{Cite book |first1=Renée |last1=Karina |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=edUuAAAAYAAJ&q=+Rabb%C3%AD+Yehud%C3%A1+Ha-Lev%C3%AD |title=Estudios sobre el judeo-español en México |first2=Enríquez |last2=Andrade |first3=Héctor |last3=Manuel |date=1998 |publisher=Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia |isbn=9789701806845 |location=Ciudad de México, México |page=73 |via=Google Books |access-date= |lang=es }}
