Progress of Dum Dum Cantonment metro station

File:Dum Dum Cantonment Metro Station.jpg]]

An amount of Rs 227 crore contract to build this station along with a mostly at-grade {{Cvt|2.16|km}} section from the Bagjola Canal to the existing ramp of the Airport Circular Railway track was awarded to Senbo Engineering Limited all the way back in June 2011. Since then, the station's civil structure has been built, but work for the at-grade track section could not be started due to land acquisition issues along the line's proposed alignment. But the rehabilitation work has completed in 2020, and the work is going smoothly. Recently girders were placed over Eastern Railway tracks. The metro station is set to be operational by Mid-2025.{{cite web|url=https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/kolkata/inspection-in-april-kolkata-likely-to-get-its-first-airport-metro-link-by-july/articleshow/119721570.cms|title=Kolkata likely to get its first airport metro link by July|publisher=The Times of India|access-date=31 March 2025}}{{cite web|url=https://timesproperty.com/news/post/kolkata-noapara-airport-metro-set-for-mid-2025-launch-blid9580|title=Kolkata’s Noapara-Airport Metro Set For Mid-2025 Launch|publisher=timesproperty|access-date=31 March 2025}}

Project development

Earlier this line was planned to be divided into two line: up and down line. Both was meant to be start from Noapara Metro Station and meet at Bimanbandar railway station. The up line was meant to run along with Belghoria express and meant to have two new station at Ramkrishna Pally and Shantinagar. The down line was meant to use Old Dum Dum Cantonment - Biman Bandar section's alignment, viaducts and stations. However the plan changed later, and now both line will pass through Dum Dum Cantonment - Bimanbandar section.{{Cite web |title=mtp.indianrailways.gov.in |url=https://mtp.indianrailways.gov.in/view_section.jsp?lang=0&id=0,1,397}}

The project will be completed in three phases. The first phase of work from Noapara to Biman Bandar is under progress. In the second phase work from Biman Bandar to New Barrackpore will be done and in the last phase from New Barrackpore to Barasat work will be done. But the development work from New Barrackpore to Barasat got struck for the last eight years since it was sanctioned because of encroachments.{{Cite web|url=https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/kolkata/kolkata-metro-to-run-below-surface-after-airport/articleshow/70342134.cms|title=Kolkata: Metro to run below surface after airport|date=July 23, 2019|first=Jayanta|last=Gupta|website=The Times of India|language=en|access-date=2020-03-25}} and the Airport Authority of India objected the elevated stretches from New Barrackpore to Barasat. Later, after objections from AAI, a decision was taken to convert this into an underground stretch. On 29 June 2019 sanction for material modification for underground construction at an additional cost of {{INRConvert|1615|c}} was sent to Railway Board by Metro. For this underground tunneling AAI has agreed to shift their fuel tanks, buildings and cables and the project is expected to be started from 2020.{{cite web|url=https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/kolkata/kolkata-metro-to-run-below-surface-after-airport/articleshow/70342134.cms |title=Metro to run below surface after airport|work=Times of India|date=26 July 2019}}

Construction of an underground integrated station for Orange Line and Yellow Line has begun at NSCBI Airport land just {{Convert|150|m|4=0}} away from the terminal building.

The development of New Barrackpore to Barasat was supposed to go elevated to cut down the expenses, but the stretch was in doubt due to huge encroachment problem. But in February 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave his nod to construct this stretch underground, giving respite to thousands of families who were supposed to be evicted for the development of the elevated stretch.{{cite news |title=PM nod for underground Metro averts eviction |url=https://www.telegraphindia.com/west-bengal/prime-minister-nod-for-underground-metro-averts-eviction/cid/1805748 |access-date=14 March 2021 |work=www.telegraphindia.com}} In order to lower the cost of the underground work, latest technology TBM will not be used, instead old technology of cut and cover method will be used for metro.

Yellow Line has been divided into three phases.

  • Phase 1: Noapara - Biman Bandar (Under trials, commercial services to start from mid-2025)
  • Phase 2: Biman Bandar - New Barrackpore (under construction till Michael Nagar; Michael Nagar - New Barrackpur metro stretch resumes as AAI permits 18m cranes and external construction)
  • Phase 3: New Barrackpore - Barasat (Planned, construction will begin soon)
