Career
Before moving to The Atlantic, Appelbaum taught at Harvard University. Appelbaum's academic work focused on what is jokingly called the "Gilded Age", the associative republicanism of the late 19th century, an era when mass-membership organizations like the Knights of Pythias, Chicago Lumber Exchange, and the Woman's Christian Temperance Union were central to national politics.{{cite news|last1=Perry|first1=David M.|title=From Grad School to 'The Atlantic'|url=http://chronicle.com/article/From-Grad-School-to-The/189907/|access-date=26 May 2015|publisher=Chronicle of Higher Education|date=11 February 2015|archive-date=11 May 2015|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150511202505/http://chronicle.com/article/From-Grad-School-to-The/189907|url-status=live}}
In the March 2019 issue of The Atlantic, Appelbaum wrote a long-form article making the case for the impeachment of President Donald Trump.{{cite news|last1=Appelbaum|first1=Yoni|title=Impeach Donald Trump|url=https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2019/03/impeachment-trump/580468/|access-date=17 January 2019|publisher=The Atlantic|archive-date=27 February 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210227204017/https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2019/03/impeachment-trump/580468/|url-status=live}}{{cite news |last1=Hoeven |first1=Emily |title='Impeach Donald Trump': 5 takeaways from The Atlantic's new cover story |url=https://www.deseretnews.com/article/900051224/impeach-donald-trump-impeachment-5-takeaways-from-the-atlantic-yoni-appelbaum-new-cover-story-issue.html |access-date=30 March 2019 |publisher=Deseret News |date=17 January 2019 |archive-date=30 March 2019 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190330111054/https://www.deseretnews.com/article/900051224/impeach-donald-trump-impeachment-5-takeaways-from-the-atlantic-yoni-appelbaum-new-cover-story-issue.html |url-status=dead }} According to Margaret Sullivan writing in The Washington Post, Appelbaum's essay is the article that "moved... impeachment, all-but-taboo in Big Media's coverage of Trump,...., from the margins into the mainstream — across the journalism spectrum."{{cite news |last1=Sullivan |first1=Margaret |title=Get used to it: The 'I-word' — impeachment — is about to dominate Trump coverage |url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/get-used-to-it-the-i-word--impeachment--is-about-to-dominate-trump-coverage/2019/01/18/0d488fc6-1b44-11e9-8813-cb9dec761e73_story.html |access-date=21 January 2019 |newspaper=The Washington Post |date=19 March 2019 |archive-date=20 January 2019 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190120235121/https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/get-used-to-it-the-i-word--impeachment--is-about-to-dominate-trump-coverage/2019/01/18/0d488fc6-1b44-11e9-8813-cb9dec761e73_story.html |url-status=live }}
