History
The community agreed to create the dormitory with the student body taking administrative responsibility, but starting in the early 1970s both the Ministry of Education and the university leadership attempted to shut down dorms, including Yoshida, that they identified as "hotbeds for various kinds of conflict."{{cite news|url=http://travel.cnn.com/tokyo/sleep/yoshidaryo-japans-most-famously-decrepit-dormitory-179885|title=Yoshidaryo: Japan's most famously decrepit dormitory|work=CNN|first=Roy|last=Berman|date=May 4, 2010|access-date=September 27, 2018}} Residents of Yoshida consistently resisted these efforts, including refusing to leave the dorm when, in 1986, the university announced a deadline for demolishing the dormitory.{{cite news|url=https://www.japantimes.co.jp/community/2018/09/26/issues/kyoto-dorm-time-forgot-japanese-students-dig/|title=At the Kyoto dorm that time forgot, Japanese students dig in|work=The Japan Times|first=J. J.|last=O'Donoghue|date=September 26, 2018|access-date=September 27, 2018}} In June 2009 Kyoto University authorities proposed a plan for the partial demolition of the old dormitory to increase on-campus living capacity, but after an informal debate was held between university authorities and the community, the proposal failed to achieve support from dormitory residents.{{cite web|url=http://www.kyoto-up.org/archives/730|title=吉田寮改築、予算見通し立たず 焦点は新A棟と食堂|website=Kyoto University Press|date=June 1, 2009|access-date=September 27, 2018}}
